Abington Overpowers Bryn Athyn, 67-53

Bryn Athyn, Pa. – Senior Isabella Vazquez and junior Angela Sanders combined for 43 points as the Penn State Abington women's basketball team defeated Bryn Athyn College, 67-53, in a non-conference contest on Monday night at the Asplundh Field House.

How It Happened
 
* Abington never trailed in the game and led 19-12 by the end of the first quarter.  Bryn Athyn made it a 22-20 game early in the second quarter before Abington ripped off 11 straight points to increase its lead to as many as 13 points.  Vazquez capped the run at the 2:13 mark with a jumper to make the score 33-20.
 
* Bryn Athyn closed out the final two minutes with a mini 6-0 run to cut the deficit down to 33-26 entering halftime.
 
* In the third quarter, Abington re-established a double-digit lead late when sophomore Safara McIntyre scored a fastbreak layup to make the score 45-35 at the 2:14 mark. 
 
* Abington put the game out of reach midway through the fourth quarter.  Leading 57-47 the Nittany Lions went on an 8-0 run to grab their biggest lead of the game.  A Sanders layup increased the lead to 65-47 with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
*  Vazquez led all scorers with 23 points as she shot 10-of-17 from the field.  She finished the game with 10 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season.
 
* Sanders finished with 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to record her fourth straight double-double and seventh of the season.  It marked her 18th career double-double. She also finished the game with six assists and two steals.
 
* McIntyre recorded a season-high nine rebounds to go along with a game-high and season-best nine assists.  She also totaled a game-high six steals on defense.
 
* Junior Camille Fleming added six points and seven rebounds, while senior Cassie Tavormina added eight points, four rebounds, three assists and three blocks. 
 
* Abington held the edge on the glass recording 52 rebounds compared to just 34 by Bryn Athyn.  It marked the team's second highest rebound total on the year.
 
* For Bryn Athyn, Kaylia Duncan led the Lions with nine points to go along with four rebounds, three assists and five steals.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Bryn Athyn since the start of the 2013-14 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 6-4 versus the Lions in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday as the Nittany Lions host Lancaster Bible College in a United East Conference matchup.  Game time is set for 5 p.m. at the Abington Athletic Building.
