Abington Celebrates Senior Day with Postseason Berth

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team had plenty to celebrate on Saturday at Memorial Field as the Nittany Lions recognized their senior class prior to the game against Gallaudet University.  Abington held the Bison scoreless on its way to a 14-0 victory in rainy conditions and in the process became the first team in the United East to clinch a postseason berth.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored 10 first half goals, including a combined seven by juniors Eljo Agolli and Arsene Bado.  Agolli finished the game with three goals and one assist, while Bado tallied a career-high four goals.
 
* Roan Vadakan scored the game's first goal within the first 77 seconds of play.  The Nittany Lions also received first half goals by senior Mike Thomas who converted a penalty kick in the 13th minute.  Freshman Hugh Nungessor capped the scoring in the first half with his sixth goal of the season in the 44th minute.
 
* In the second half freshman Collin Meo scored a pair of goals for his second and third scores of the season.  Freshman Adrian Docen registered his first career goal in the 64th minute, while freshman Amerr Yagoub finished off the scoring for the day with his second goal of the season in the 69th minute.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* The 14 goals by the Nittany Lions set a new program record breaking the previous total of 13 set in 2013 against Valley Forge. 
 
* Abington had 11 assists credited on the 14 goals which also set a new team record.  Prior to today the most assists in a game were nine set against Saint Elizabeth in 2016.  Thomas and Vadakan each had two assists in the game.
 
* The Nittany Lions totaled a season-high 35 shots which is the fourth most shots in a single game in program history.
 
* Senior goalkeepers Matt Sheldon and John Simpson combined for the shutout in net.  Sheldon tallied one save after starting the first 33 minutes, while Simpson finished the game with three saves in 57 minutes.
 
Regional Recognition
For the second time this season the Nittany Lions are regionally ranked.  Abington found itself ranked seventh in Region IV when the United Soccer Coaches released the latest rankings earlier in the week.
 
Postseason Bound
Abington will be returning to the postseason after officially clinching a spot in the upcoming United East Tournament.  The Nittany Lions have appeared in the conference tournament each year since 2016 with exception of 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic when the postseason was cancelled.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn State Berks in a United East matchup.  Game time is set for 5 p.m.
