Abington Competes in Tri-Match at St. Mary’s

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches after competing in a tri-match hosted by St. Mary's College (Md.) on Saturday at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.  The Nittany Lions fell to host St. Mary's, 3-0, in United East play and then fell short to Hollins University, 3-1, in a non-conference match.

How It Happened vs. St. Mary's
 
* Abington trailed 16-15 in the opening set before St. Mary's followed with six unanswered points to take a 21-16 lead.  The Nittany Lions quickly responded with four straight points to make it a one score game at 21-20.  Abington went on to tie the score at 24-24 and at 25-25 but was unable to pull ahead of the Seahawks.  St. Mary's clinched the set, 27-25, on a kill by Grace Caudell.
 
* In the second set the Nittany Lions held a 14-11 advantage after back-to-back kills from freshmen Jayla Hickey and Kayla Mason.  The Seahawks tied the set at 14-14 and 15-15 before the Nittany Lions regained the lead at 17-15 after a kill by senior Taylor LaPage broke the latter tie.  However, St. Mary's followed by scoring 10 of the next 11 points to win the set at 25-18.
 
* Abington led 4-3 early in the third set but a 6-0 run by St. Mary's gave the Seahawks a 9-4 lead.  St. Mary's led by as many as eight points at 19-11 before closing out the set with a 6-0 run to win the set, 25-12. 
 
Inside the Numbers vs. St. Mary's
 
*  Sophomore Alyssa Flickinger recorded a team-high seven kills to go along with three block assists, while fellow sophomore Brianna Brozo added six kills and eight digs.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Schaefer came away with a team-high 13 digs.
 
* Sophomore Laine Kulpinski finished with 20 assists, nine digs and two aces.
 
* For St. Mary's, Meghan Stevens led the match with 12 kills and 14 digs, while Camilla Galeano totaled 12 digs.  Lauren Panageotou finished with 13 assists, five aces and nine digs.
 
How It Happened vs. Hollins
 
* Abington jumped out to an 11-3 advantage and led majority of the set. Hollins slowly chipped away at the Abington lead and cut it down to two points at 21-19.  Hollins then used a 5-0 run to grab its first lead of the set at 24-21.  The Nittany Lions rebounded with a 5-0 run of their own to close out the set with a 26-24 victory.  Flickinger started the run with a kill and Brozo recorded a pair of aces during the surge.
 
* In the second set Hollins used a 13-3 run after leading 7-5 to pull ahead of the Nittany Lions. After both teams exchanged a pair of points, Abington recorded four straight points to make it a 22-14 score but the deficit was too much to overcome as Hollins closed out the set with the final three points to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-14 victory.
 
* In the third set it was Abington's turn to use a big run to pull ahead late.  With Hollins leading, 14-9, the Nittany Lions went on an 11-2 run to grab a 20-16 lead.  Abington took advantage of five errors by Hollins as well as receiving a pair of kills from Hickey and two aces from Kulpinski. Despite the four point lead, the Nittany Lions were unable to hold on as Hollins followed with a 9-1 run to take the set, 25-21.
 
* Hollins sealed the match with a fourth set victory.  HU opened with a 14-1 run and never looked back.  Abington did cut the deficit down to six points at 17-11 and 20-14 but was unable to get any closer.  Hollins took the set, 25-15.

* Hickey recorded a match-high 11 kills, while Flickinger finished with eight kills.
 
* Kulpinski totaled 18 assists and added 11 digs.
 
* Schaefer led the team with 14 digs. 
 
* For Hollins, Faith Schaefer totaled 11 kills and seven digs, while Zo Miranda totaled a match-high 16 digs.
 
Pacing the Offense
Kulpinski has been the team's primary setter for the past two seasons and with her 38 combined assists in today's matches she has surpassed 800 in her career and currently sits fourth all-time with 818 career assists. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the third meeting between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2021 season.  The Seahawks are 3-0 versus the Nittany Lions in the all-time series.  Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Hollins.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 as the Nittany Lions host Centenary University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
