Abington Defeats Centenary in Non-Conference Match

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team had three players record double-digit kills as the Nittany Lions defeated Centenary University, 3-1, in a non-conference match on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  Freshman Jayla Hickey (17) and sophomores Brianna Brozo (15) and Alyssa Flickinger (14) all set career-highs in kills.

How It Happened
 
* After dropping a close opening set, 27-25, the Nittany Lions bounced back with a 25-19 victory in the second set to tie the match at 1-1. Abington used a 9-1 run after trailing 12-11 to take control of the match with a 20-13 advantage.  Hickey and Flickinger combined for five kills during the run.  The Cyclones cut into the lead to come within four at 22-18 but Abington followed by scoring three of the next four points to take the set.
 
* Abington took a 2-1 lead in the match after jumping out in the third set with a 9-2 lead.  The Nittany Lions never trailed in the set and increased their lead to as many as 13 points at 18-5 before taking the set, 25-14.
 
* The fourth set went back and forth early but the Nittany Lions pulled ahead with a 5-1 run after only leading 13-12 at the time.  The mini surge gave Abington an 18-13 lead.  Centenary made it a three point score at 22-18 but that would be as close as they would get before Abington scored three of the final four points of the set. 
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Hickey led the match with a career-high 17 kills as she committed just three errors on 31 attempts for a .452 attack percentage. 
 
* Brozo also set a career-high with 15 kills to go along with a career-high 12 digs.
 
* Flickinger totaled a career-high 14 kills while hitting at a .323 clip after committing only four errors on 31 attempts. 
 
* Sophomore Laine Kulpinski also had a career night as she recorded 40-plus assists for the first time as she finished with a match-high 43.  She also had four aces and nine digs.  With her four aces, Kulpinski surpassed 100 for her career and now has 102.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Schaefer led the match with 16 digs.
 
* For Centenary, Poppy Skjonnemand led the Cyclones with 14 kills, while Alyssa Bizzarro finished with 11 kills and eight digs. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Centenary since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions improve to 8-0 versus the Cyclones in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 21 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn College in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
