Abington Rallies to Defeat Wildcats in Five Sets

Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team won the fourth set in convincing fashion to force a fifth and decisive set against Penn College in United East Conference (UEC) action on Saturday afternoon at Bardo Gymnasium.  The Nittany Lions went on to take the fifth set, 15-9, to win the match three sets to two.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 2-1 in the match and faced an uphill battle after falling behind 8-4 in the fourth set.  However, the Nittany Lions managed to tie the set at 14-14 and went on to score 11 of the final 12 points, including nine straight to cap the scoring and win the set, 25-15.  Sophomore Laine Kulpinski recorded four straight aces at one point during the final surge.
 
* Abington used another late run in the final set to clinch the match.  With the score tied 6-6, the Nittany Lions scored three straight points thanks to two errors by the Wildcats to lead 9-6.  After both teams exchanged points, Abington followed with a 5-1 run to close out the set.  Sophomore Alyssa Flickinger had two kills in the final stretch, while Kulpinski sealed the victory with her 11th ace of the match as the Nittany Lions won, 15-9.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* It was another career day for Kulpinski this week as she set a new career-high with 11 aces; one shy of the newly established school record set by sophomore Brianna Brozo earlier in the year.  Kulpinski also had 27 assists and eight digs.
 
* Freshman Jayla Hickey finished with a team-high 13 kills, while Brozo added 11 kills and eight digs.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Schaefer finished with a match-high 21 digs.
 
* For Penn College, Coryn Oswald totaled 14 kills and 16 digs, while Cheyenne Stein finished with 33 assists and seven digs.  She also had six aces.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 10-0 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 25 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Berks in the team's final home regular season contest of the season.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.  Prior to the match the Nittany Lions will recognize its senior class in part of Senior Night Festivities.
