Burns Ties Goals Record Against Gwynedd Mercy

Abington, Pa. – Penn State Abington senior Grace Burns tied the program record for most career goals with 27 as the Nittany Lions hosted Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference contest on Monday afternoon at Memorial Field.  The Griffins defeated the Nittany Lions, 3-1.

How It Happened
 
* Burns registered the record tying goal in the 12th minute of action after getting fouled inside the box.  As a result, the team was rewarded a penalty kick in which Burns converted for her fourth goal of the season and the 27th of her career.  It also marked her third career PK as she is now a perfect 3-for-3 in converting.
 
* Gwynedd tied the game in the 21st minute when Ksenia Semenovykh connected on her team-leading 11th goal of the season. Semenovykh's goal jumped started a stretch of three straight goals for the Griffins.  In the 32nd minute Bridget Cannon gave Gwynedd Mercy the lead with her fourth goal of the season to make the score 2-1.  Less than five minutes later Bethany Beinlich increased the Griffins' lead to 3-1 with her fourth tally of the season.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Burns' next goal will set a new program standard for most career goals.  She is currently tied with former standout Mallory Mugnier who scored 27 goals from 2013-2015.  Burns' score in the 12th minute also marked her 60th career point tying her for third place in the program's record book for most points.
 
* Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Wilfrid made five saves in net for the Nittany Lions.

* Burns and junior Madison McDowell combined for nine of the team's shots.  McDowell finished with five shots with two on-goal.  Freshman Nayesko Ravelo added three shots.
 
* Gwynedd Mercy held the edge on total shots at 18-12 and also had the advantage on corner kicks by a 5-3 margin.
 
* The Griffins' goalkeeper, Miranda Abrams, made four saves.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2018 season.  The Nittany Lions and Griffins are tied 2-2-0 in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 4 as the Nittany Lions host Stevenson University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Memorial Field.
