Abington Shuts Down Wilson, 3-0

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team shutout visiting Wilson College by the score of 3-0 in a non-conference match on Monday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 5-1 to start the opening set but used a 9-1 run later in the set to pull ahead of the Phoenix by the score of 15-10.  Back-to-back service aces by sophomore Laine Kulpinski capped the run.  Abington increased its lead to 23-16 late in the set after four straight kills, including a pair by freshman Jayla Hickey. Wilson responded with four points of its town to cut the deficit to 23-20 but Abington managed to record the final two points with Kulpinski sealing the set with an ace for a 25-20 win.
 
* In the second set the Nittany Lions fell behind early but eventually tied the set and took the lead for good with a 6-1 run.  Sophomore Brianna Brozo made the score 15-11 with a kill to cap the run.  The Phoenix tied the set at 16-16, but the Nittany Lions responded with two straight kills from freshmen Brynn Atkins and Kayla Mason to regain the lead at 18-16. Abington would go on to take the set by the score of 25-20.
 
* Abington jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set and never relinquished the lead.  The Nittany Lions led by as many as nine points after Brozo recorded a kill to make the score 15-6.  Wilson though went on an 11-2 run to tie the set at 17-17, however the Nittany Lions responded with three straight points to regain the lead at 20-17. The Phoenix tied the set two more ties, including at 21-21 before the Nittany Lions ripped off three unanswered points via the kill to set up match-point. After a kill by Wilson's Abby Moreland, Abington won the set off a bade set by the Phoenix to take the final set, 25-22.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Hickey finished with a team-high 20 kills to go along with three total blocks (1BS/2BA).
 
* Brozo totaled nine kills on the night with five digs.
 
* Mason added seven points and seven digs, while Atkins contributed a season-high six kills. 
 
* Sophomore Morgan Schaefer finished with a team-high 13 digs.
 
* Kulpinski totaled 32 assists; one shy of her season-high.  She also had three aces and three digs.
 
* For Wilson, Moreland recorded a match-high 12 kills to go along with eight digs, while Deah Menedis added 11 kills.  Addie Hebert totaled a match-high 17 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth meeting between Abington and Wilson since the start of the 2016 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-1 versus the Phoenix in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, Oct. 6 as the Nittany Lions resume United East play against Gallaudet University.  Match time is set for 6 p.m. at the Abington Athletic Building.
