Abington Falls to Widener in Season Opener

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped its season opener to Widener University by the score of 90-61 on day one of the Gwynedd University Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night at the Griffin Complex.

How It Happened
 
* Widener opened the game on a 7-0 run and went on to outscore the Nittany Lions, 17-6, in the opening quarter. 
 
* The Pride led by as many as 17 points at the 8:43 mark in the second quarter after a three-point play capped by a free throw by Mia Robbins made the score 23-6.  However, over the next six-plus minutes the Nittany Lions cut the deficit down to single digits thanks to a 14-6 run.  Freshman Amina Reid made it a nine-point game at 29-20 with 2:47 to play until halftime after splitting a pair of free throws.
 
* Widener responded and increased its lead to a first half high 19 points after Gianna Samuels converted a pair of free throws to make the score 41-22.  Freshman Angel Morris scored a layup as time expired for the Nittany Lions as the Pride entered the locker rooms at the half with a 41-24 lead.
 
* In the third quarter, Widener maintained its double-digit lead and led by as many as 28 points late in the quarter.  A fastbreak basket by Jordan D'Ambrosio increased the Prides' lead to 62-34.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Senior Angela Sanders led the Nittany Lions with 19 points (7-17 FG | 2-3 3FG) to go along with four rebounds, two steals and a block.
 
* Freshman Amirah Hackney nearly came away with a double-double in her collegiate debut as she finished with 14 points (7-14 FG) and a team-high nine rebounds. 
 
* Reid and Morris each totaled 12 points in their first collegiate game.
 
* For Widener, Robbins recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds.  D'Ambrosio added 15 points.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Widener.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 11 as the Nittany Lions close out the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament.  The Nittany Lions will face the host Griffins in a non-conference game starting at 2 p.m.
