Abington Closes Out Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team wrapped up the Gwynedd Mercy University Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Griffin Complex.  The Nittany Lions fell to the host Griffins by the score of 90-63 in a non-conference match up.

How it Happened
 
* A big fourth quarter run by Gwynedd Mercy turned out to be the difference in the game.  After freshman Kylie Frey knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 64-56 at the 7:38 mark of the final frame, the Griffins followed with a 13-1 run to push their lead to 20 points.  Lynzie Eggers converted a pair of free throws to make the score 77-57.
 
* The Griffins initial 13-1 run eventually turned into 22-2 surge with the home team leading, 86-58, in the final 1:12. 
 
* Abington opened the game scoring the first five points on a jumper by senior Angela Sanders and a three-pointer by Frey.  The Nittany Lions kept things relatively close despite the Griffins taking over the lead late in the quarter.  Gwynedd Mercy led 21-18 after the first quarter.
 
* The Nittany Lions regained the lead at 24-23 early in the second quarter when freshman Sereniti Minor scored a fastbreak basket to cap a 6-0 run.  Three possessions later the Griffins grabbed the lead back after a three-pointer by Gabby Marinacci.  Gwynedd would hold on to the lead the rest of the quarter and took a 43-39 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
* In the third quarter the Nittany Lions came within one point of tying the game after freshman Amirah Hackney hit a jumper to make the score 47-46.  However, the Griffins responded with a 10-0 run for its first double-digit lead of the game at 57-46 at the 1:12 mark of the quarter.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Hackney led the Nittany Lions with a team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists.
 
* Sanders also finished in double-figures as she contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
 
* Freshman Angel Morris came off the bench and totaled 12 points (4-8 FG | 2-3 3FG) and four rebounds.
 
* Freshman Amina Reid dished out a game-high seven assists to go along with six points and four rebounds.
 
* Freshman Layla Reid forced five turnovers on defense as she came away with five steals while grabbing seven rebounds. 
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Eggers tallied a game-high 30 points while dishing out six assists. Ava Casele added 18 points, while Natalie O'Neill registered a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy and the first since the 2012-13 season.  The Griffins won the first-ever meeting in 2012.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 14 as the Nittany Lions host Delaware Valley University in the team's home opener at the Abington Athletic Building. Tip-off for the non-conference contest is set for 6 p.m.
