Abington Rallies to Defeat Bryn Athyn in ‘Battle of the Lions’

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit at the half to defeat Bryn Athyn College, 77-66, in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night at the Abington Athletic Building. The victory marked the Nittany Lions sixth straight over their cross-town rival in 'The Battle of the Lions'.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 35-25 after the first half and faced an 11-point deficit early in the second half when Bryn Athyn's Jalen Jackson converted a three-point play with a free throw to make the score 42-31.
 
* Senior Jake Schalki drilled a three-pointer to cut the lead down to single digits at 42-34 at the 15:13 mark.  Schalki's three jump-started a 16-6 run for the Nittany Lions which was capped off by another Schalki three-pointer to make the score 48-47 midway through the half.
 
* Bryn Athyn responded with a three-pointer to make it a two-possession game again, but back-to-back baskets on the next two Nittany Lions' possessions tied the game at 51-51.  Junior Na'Kai Carew tied the game with a fastbreak layup at the 8:26 mark.
 
* The score would be tied one last time at 53-53 before Abington took the lead for good.  Fifth-year Alex Podolski knocked down a three-pointer to break the final tie of the game and give the Nittany Lions a 56-53 advantage. 
 
* Down the stretch junior Myles Haynes hit a clutch three-pointer to increase the Nittany Lions' lead to 66-58 with 3:43 to play in regulation.  Bryn Athyn would come as close as four points of the Abington lead when James Dyson scored a fastbreak layup to make the score 68-64. 
 
* Abington shot 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final :90 seconds to hold off Bryn Athyn.  The Nittany Lions held their cross-town rival to 0-for-4 shooting on their final four possessions.
 
Inside the Box Score

* Podolski recorded his first double-double of the season as he finished with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds.  It's the second time this season that Podolski netted 25 points.  He finished the game shooting 8-of-13 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
 
* Schalki also scored 20-plus points as he totaled 23 points to go along with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.
 
* Redshirt sophomore Christian Niles finished in double-figures with 13 points.  Niles also had five rebounds, three assists and two steals. 
 
* For Bryn Athyn, Jalen Jackson scored a team-high 24 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists, while Jalen Parker finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 13th meeting between Abington and Bryn Athyn since the start of the 2013-14 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-4 versus the Lions after winning the last six matchups.

Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 28 as the Nittany Lions open United East play with a road game at Penn State Berks.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
