Abington Drops Conference Opener at Berks

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team dropped its United East Conference (UEC) opener at Penn State Berks by the score of 90-81 on Tuesday night at the Beaver Athletics & Wellness Center.

How It Happened
 
* Abington found itself trailing by double-digits midway through the first half when Berks held a 29-16 lead at the 9:58 mark.  Over the next four-plus minutes, Abington rallied to tie the game at 32-32 when redshirt sophomore Christian Niles scored a layup basketball.  Niles' score capped an impressive 16-3 run by the Nittany Lions.
 
* The Abington offense continued to roll through the rest of the first half and took a 46-38 lead into the locker rooms at halftime after fifth-year Alex Podolski capped the scoring with a three-pointer.  Abington outscored Berks, 30-9, the final 10 minutes of the half.
 
* In the second half the Berks' offense exploded with 32-4 run over the first 6:18 of the half to take a commanding 20-point lead.  Marquis Ferreira gave Berks a 70-50 advantage after draining a three-pointer at the 13:42 mark.
 
* Abington still trailed by double-digits with a 19-point deficit (82-63) at the 5:16 mark of the half and cut the Berks' lead down to single digits thanks to an 11-0 run.  Senior Jake Schalki scored a layup basket with 2:49 remaining in regulation to make the score 82-74.
 
* Abington came within seven points twice down the stretch with the latter coming in the final minute when sophomore Dylan Shead scored a basket to make the score 86-79.  Berks followed with back-to-back baskets on its next two possessions to increase its lead back to double-digits.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Schalki recorded his second double-double of the season after finishing with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
* Podolski, the United East Volt Division Offensive Player of the Week, finished with 24 points; one shy of his season-high.  It marked the second straight game and third this season that Podolski has scored 20-plus points. He also totaled six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
 
* Niles also scored in double-figures as he came away with 10 points and five rebounds.
 
* Junior Kolby Miller tied his season-high with nine points while grabbing six rebounds.
 
* Junior Na'Kai Carew added seven points and six rebounds, while junior Myles Haynes and Shead each totaled eight points.
 
* For Berks, Andre Ballard scored a game-high 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.  Ferreira also totaled 20-plus points with a 23-point performance.
 
* Berks scored 37 points off turnovers and knocked down 14 three-pointers.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 23rd meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 15-8 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 30 as the Nittany Lions travel to King's College for a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
