Abington’s Late Rally Not Enough as Seagulls Prevail

Salisbury, Md. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team nearly erased an 18-point fourth quarter deficit in a non-conference bout on the road against Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon at the Maggs Physical Activities Center.  The Seagulls held off the Nittany Lions for an 81-72 victory.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed by as many as 18 points on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter with the later coming at the 8:00 mark after Cora Shafer scored a layup basket to give the Seagulls a 73-55 lead.
 
* Over the next 4:23 minutes the Nittany Lions cut the deficit down to single digits thanks to an 11-0 run.  Freshman Layla Reid capped the run with a layup score after forcing a steal on defense.  Reid's basket made the score 73-66 with 3:37 to play in regulation.
 
* The Nittany Lions made a stop on defense on the ensuing possession but was unable to capitalize and extend their run on the other end of the court.  Salisbury followed with an 8-0 run to increase its lead back to double-digits with 1:37 left on the clock.  Sym Deloatch split a pair of free throws to make the score 81-66.
 
* Abington scored the final six points of the game over the final :75 seconds to cut the deficit back down to single digits at 81-72.
 
* Abington led by as many as five points in the second quarter when the Nittany Lions held a 32-27 lead after senior Angela Sanders scored a layup with 2:29 to play until halftime.  The Seagulls closed out the second quarter on an 8-2 run to regain the lead heading into the locker rooms at halftime, 35-34.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Sanders scored a team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and two steals.  With her 15 points, Sanders is now 40 points away from becoming the third player in program history to score 1,000 points.  She'll enter her next game with 960 career points.
 
* Freshman Amirah Hackney recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.  Hackney also had a season-high two blocks on defense.
 
* Reid also scored in double-figures as she came off the bench to provide a season-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. 
 
* Junior Kaya Mobley finished the game with nine points and six rebounds, while freshman Amina Reid added eight points, five rebounds and three steals.
 
* For Salisbury, Alex Bull led all scorers with 24 points (8-15 FG) to go along with eight rebounds.  Shafter recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Salisbury and the first since the 2012-13 season.  The Seagulls have been on the winning end of both matchups against the Nittany Lions.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 28 as the Nittany Lions begin United East Conference play on the road against Penn State Berks.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
