Abington Wins United East Opener at Berks

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team opened United East Conference (UEC) play with a convincing victory over Penn State Berks by the score of 94-45 on Tuesday night at the Beaver Athletics & Wellness Center.  The 94 points scored by the Nittany Lions was one shy of the team's season-high scored just last week against Clarks Summit University.

How It Happened
 
* Leading 20-15 after the first quarter, Abington broke the game wide open by scoring the first 14 points of the second quarter to take a commanding 34-15 lead.  Senior Angela Sanders capped the run with a jumper at the 5:53 mark that gave Abington the 19-point advantage.
 
* Abington maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the quarter and took a 21-point lead into halftime after freshman Amina Reid scored the final basket of the half as time expired.  Reid's basket made the score 46-25.
 
* In the second half Abington had the game in hand outscoring Berks, 48-20, for the final 20 minutes, including 27-5 in the fourth quarter. 
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Freshman Sereniti Minor led all scorers with 21 points tying her season-high.  Minor filled the box score with season-highs in rebounds (9), assists (6) and steals (3).
 
* Sanders recorded her third double-double of the season and the 27th of her career with a 16-point/12-rebound performance.  Sanders is now in striking distance of the 1,000-career point milestone as she'll enter her next game 24 points shy of 1,000.  She currently has 976 career points.
 
* Freshman Amirah Hackney registered her third double-double and second straight after totaling 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Hackney, the United East Volt Division Defensive Player of the Week, also had two blocks and two steals.
 
* Junior Kaya Mobley tied her season-high as she dished out a game-high seven assists. Mobley also had five points and recorded two blocks and three steals on defense.
 
* Freshmen Amina and Layla Reid each scored in double-figures.  Amina totaled 11 points and three assists, while Layla finished with 13 points and three steals.

* As a team, Abington converted a season-high 24 free throws on 35 attempts. 
 
* For Berks, Hailey Miller led the team with 17 points and six rebounds, while Ashlyn Clark totaled 11 points.  Mahala Ruffner recorded a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 23rd meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 14-9 versus Berks in the all-time series and has won the last five match ups.
 
Next Up
Abington is idle for a week and will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 6 as the Nittany Lions travel to Brooklyn College for a non-conference contest.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
