Sanders Reaches 1,000 Career Points at Brooklyn College

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Penn State Abington senior Angela Sanders became just the fifth player in program history to score 1,000 career points as she totaled 24 points against Brooklyn College in a non-conference match up on Wednesday night at the West Quad Center.  The Bulldogs defeated the Nittany Lions, 85-74.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 18-11 at the 4:03 mark of the opening quarter but quickly went on a 10-4 run over the next 2:30 minutes to cut the deficit down to one.  Sanders scored a layup off an offensive rebound to make the score 22-21.  The Bulldogs responded on their next possession and maintained the lead with a 27-25 advantage by quarters end.
 
* Brooklyn increased its lead to double-digits early in the second quarter.  Leading 31-27 at the 8:47 mark, the Bulldogs used a 15-4 run over the next five minutes to swell the lead to 15 points.  A layup basket by Brianna Gutierrez made the score 46-31.  The Bulldogs would go on to take a 52-34 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
* Brooklyn maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the game until the final seconds of the fourth quarter when the Nittany Lions cut the deficit down to 83-74.  The Bulldogs led by as many as 20 points when holding a 77-57 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Sanders entered the game needing only 24 points to reach 1,000 for her career and she scored exactly that against the Bulldogs.  She registered career points 999 and 1,000 with :37 seconds left in the fourth quarter with a layup basket as she became the fifth player in program history to reach the 1,000 career point milestone.  Sanders finished the game 10-of-18 from the field and also totaled nine rebounds and four assists.
 
* Freshman Amirah Hackney tied her season-high with a 20-point performance.  She also totaled five boards and four assists to go along with five steals on defense tying her season-high.
 
* Freshman Amina Reid netted a season-high 17 points (6-11 FG) to go along with five boards, three assists and a season-high five steals.
 
* For Brookly, Alina Estrella recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 11 steals.  Sarah James and Dior Dorsey each totaled 13 points.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Brooklyn.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday as the Nittany Lions face York College (N.Y.) in another non-conference contest.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
