Abington Drops Season Opener at Gwynedd Mercy

Gwynedd City, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team dropped its season opener on the road against Gwynedd Mercy University by the score of 82-63 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at the Griffin Complex. Tonight marked the Abington debut for first-year head coach Justin Dunbar-Stevens.

How It Happened
 
* The Griffins started the game on a 7-0 run over the first two minutes of action and went on to build a double-digit lead at 15-5 after a three-pointer by Devin Benson at the 14:38 mark.
 
* As the first half progressed the Nittany Lions chipped away at the Griffins lead and cut the deficit down to two points after trailing by as many as 13 points in the half. Down 18-5, Abington used a 16-5 run over a seven-minute span to make it a 23-21 game. Senior Jake Schalki and junior Myles Haynes each knocked down a three during the run.
 
* After Schalki's three made it a two-point game, the Griffins responded with a three of their own by Aziz Parker to increase the lead back to two possessions.  Gwynedd Mercy went on to seven points by the end of the half at 36-29.
 
* In the second half the Griffins increased their lead back to double-digits and led by as many as 16 points midway through the half after a jumper by Aquil Stewart made the score 63-47.  The Nittany Lions would once again make a run and cut the lead back down to single digits when sophomore Dylan Shead connected on a three-pointer.  Shead's three made the score 66-57 with 7:04 to play.
 
* The Griffins followed with a mini 8-2 run over the next three minutes to increase their lead to 74-59 before closing the game out overall with a 16-6 surge. 
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Schalki scored a game-high 23 points (7-11 FG) to set a new career-high after connecting on 5-of-9 from deep range.  He also grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. 
 
* Alex Podolski finished with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.  He also totaled seven boards and two assists.
 
* Redshirt sophomore Christian Niles also scored in double-figures in his Abington debut with 12 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds. 
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Parker led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Mike Marable finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked just the third meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2019-20 season.  The Griffins have won two of the three games in the series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 15 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Salisbury University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
