Abington Drops Non-Conference Game at Montclair State

Montclair, N.J. –  The Penn State Abington men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest on the road against Montclair State University by the score of 98-67 on Tuesday afternoon at the Panzer Athletic Center.

How It Happened
 
* Montclair State broke a 33-33 halftime lead an 11-1 run to start the second half.  The Red Hawks grabbed the game's first double-digit lead three minutes into the half when a layup score by Mike Jackson made the score 44-34.
 
* Abington cut the deficit to single digits at the 13:52 mark when Alex Podolski scored a basket to make it a 52-44 game.  Two possessions later, Jackson hit a three to give the Red Hawks their double-digit lead back at 55-44. 
 
* Montclair State maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the way as the Red Hawks outscored the Nittany Lions, 65-34, in the second half.  
 
* The first half went back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than two possessions.  The Nittany Lions held the biggest lead of the half with a five-point advantage after scoring the first five points of the game. The lead changed hands 18 times in the opening half and the game was tied 10 times.
 
*  Abington tied the game at 33-33 in the final seconds of the first half when Podolski split a pair of free throws.  The Nittany Lions 11-of-13 from the free throw line in the first half.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Senior Jake Schalki registered his sixth straight double-double as he totaled a career-high 24 points to lead all scorers.  He also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
* Podolski finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while junior Kolby Miller tied his career-high with 13 points.  Miller has scored in double-figures in five straight games.
 
* For Montclair State, Keyon Pryce scored a team-high 19 points, while Kunga Tsering finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.  Jackson finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Montclair State.
 
Next Up
Abington is idle until Friday, Dec. 29 when the Nittany Lions take part in the Centenary University Holiday Tournament.  The Nittany Lions are set to face William Paterson University to open the tournament with a 1 p.m. tip-off.
