Abington Remains Perfect at Home; Defeats Mighty Macs

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team had six players score in double-figures as the Nittany Lions took care of visiting Immaculata University, 97-86, in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored the game's first eight points to take an early lead in the game.  Junior Myles Haynes made it an 8-0 scored with a pair of free throws at the 16:20 mark.  The Nittany Lions would go on to increase their lead to double-digits when a Kolby Miller jumper made the score 17-5 with 12:48 to play in the half.
 
* Immaculata would respond with a 12-2 run over the next three-plus minutes to cut the deficit down to two points (19-17) after Tim Schultice knocked down a three-pointer.  Abington countered with a 10-2 run of its own to increase its lead back to double-digits at 29-19 with 6:25 to play until halftime. Fifth-year guard Alex Podolski capped the run with a pair of free throws.
 
* The Nittany Lions held on to their lead the rest of the half despite the Mighty Macs making it a four-point game (31-27) with four minutes to play in the half.  Abington finished the half with a 50-40 lead.
 
* Abington scored 14 unanswered points within the first three minutes of the second half to take a commanding 64-40 lead.  Senior Jake Schalki started the run with a three-pointer and capped the run with another three to give the Nittany Lions a 24-point advantage.
 
* Over the course of the next nine minutes of game time, the Mighty Macs chipped away at the Nittany Lions lead and used a 32-9 run to come within one point of tying the game.  A three-pointer by Mandon Seapoe made the score 73-72 at the 8:37 mark.
 
* Abington managed to increase its lead back to two possessions and maintained distance with the Mighty Macs down the stretch.  The Nittany Lions pulled away in the final minute after a layup score by junior Na'Kai Carew made it a seven-point game (93-86).  Abington converted 4-of-4 free throw attempts in the final minute with sophomore Dylan Shead and Miller each knocking down a pair.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Abington shot a season-high 50.8-percent from the field and scored a season-high 97 points; the most by the Nittany Lions since scoring 99 in a victory at Cairn University on Nov. 15, 2019.
 
* Abington had six players score in double-figures, including Schalki who recorded his third straight double-double and fourth in five games.  Schalki finished with 20 points (7-9 FG) and a team-high 11 rebounds.
 
* Podolski finished with 22 points marking his fourth straight game and fifth of the season that he has scored 20 or more points.  He also totaled six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
 
* Redshirt sophomore Christian Niles scored a season-high 19 points as he converted 9-of-10 from the free throw line, while Miller added 11 points (4-8 FG) tying his season-high.
 
* Haynes and Shead each finished with 10 points.  Haynes also had five rebounds and shot 6-of-7 from the free throw line.  The 10 points by Shead marked a career-best.
 
* As a team, the Nittany Lions shot a season-high 83.3-percent from the free throw line after converting on 30-of-36 attempts. The 30 made free throws are the most by Abington since connecting on 36 against Penn State Brandywine back on Nov. 21, 2017.
 
* For Immaculata, Schultice scored a team-high 17 points off the bench, while Tyler Tillery and Seapoe each added 14 points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the seventh meeting between Abington and Immaculata since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-3 versus the Mighty Macs in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, Dec. 4 as the Nittany Lions host the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the team's final home game of the calendar year.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
