Abington Holds Off Penn College for 68-65 Victory

Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team held off a late surge by Penn College to record a 68-65 victory in United East Conference (UEC) action on Saturday afternoon at Bardo Gymnasium.

How It Happened
 
* Abington led 65-57 with 3:28 to play in regulation after senior Alex Podolski hit a jumper for the Nittany Lions.  Over the next three minutes, Penn College went on an 8-1 run to come within a point of tying the game after a three-pointer by Gavin Barrett to cap the run. 
 
* After a timeout Abington managed to increase its lead thanks to a layup score by junior Jake Schalki with :15 seconds left on the clock.  Senior Alex Salata III found Schalki wide open in the pain for the easy layup. The Abington shutdown the Wildcats on their next two possessions to secure the three-point victory. 
 
* Abington never trailed in the game after opening with a 10-1 run. The Nittany Lions led by as many as 11 points in the first half multiple times with the latter coming at the 6:33 mark.  A layup score by Podolski gave the Nittany Lions a 26-15 lead.  Penn College would go on to close the half out on a 17-6 run to tie the game at 32-32 entering halftime.
 
* Salata opened the second half with a three-pointer on Abington's first possession to break the tie.  Abington used an 18-8 run over the first six minutes of the half to re-establish a double-digit lead at 50-40. 
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Podolski led the Nittany Lions with a season-high 21 points (9-16 FG) to go along with seven rebounds.
 
* Schalki recorded a game-high 16 rebounds to establish a new season-high.  He also scored seven points.
 
* Salata finished the game with 17 points and seven rebounds while dishing out a team-high four assists.
 
* Senior Isaac Kennon and sophomore Kolby Miller each finished the game with seven points.
 
* For Penn College, Gavin Barrett scored a game-high 28 points to go along with five rebounds and seven assists.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 14th meeting between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2014-15 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 12-2 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 as the Nittany Lions close out the regular season with a road match up against Lancaster Bible College in United East action.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
