Abington Falls to Clarks Summit in Non-Conference Matchup

Clarks Summit, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team closed out its final non-conference contest of the season with an 87-63 setback at Clarks Summit University on Monday night at Huckaby Gymnasium.

How It Happened
 
* It was a back-and-forth opening quarter as both teams exchanged leads multiple times.  Abington took an 11-10 advantage at the 4:01 mark when junior Angela Sanders hit a jumper.  Clarks Summit responded two possessions later when Ashlyn Messinger knocked down a three-pointer to give the Defenders the lead back at 13-11.  Clarks Summit added another basket with :27 seconds remaining in the quarter to cap the scoring at 15-11.
 
* Abington kept things close throughout the second quarter until the final 1:30 of action when the Defenders used a 7-2 to close out the half.  Clarks Summit went on to take a 30-21 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
* In the third quarter Clarks Summit led 35-23 at the 8:25 mark grabbing its biggest lead of the game up to that point.  Over the next four minutes the Nittany Lions rallied and used a 15-5 run to come within two points of tying the game at 40-38.  Senior Cassie Tavormina capped the run with a layup basket with 4:21 to play in the quarter.
 
* Clarks Summit responded with a run of its own scoring the next nine points to regain its double-digit lead at 49-38 with 1:33 until quarter's end.  The Defenders took a 51-42 lead into the final quarter.
 
* Abington cut the deficit down to six points early in the fourth quarter when Tavormina drained a three-pointer to make the score 56-50 at the 8:44 mark.  However, another surge by the Defenders gave the home team a 65-50 advantage with 6:52 to play.  Clarks Summit maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sanders set a new career-high with her 12th double-double of the season.  She finished with 26 points; tying her season-high set over the weekend at Penn College.  Sanders also totaled 15 rebounds to go along with four steals on defense.
 
* Junior Camille Fleming tied her season-high with 15 points while grabbing nine rebounds. 
 
* Tavormina also finished in double-figures as she registered 14 points and five rebounds. 
 
* Sophomore Safara McIntyre set a new season-high for the second straight game with 11 rebounds. 
 
* For Clarks Summit, Serene Calderon led the team with 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and six assists.  Elizabeth Singleton recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked just the fourth meeting between Abington and Clarks Summit since the start of the 2015-16 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-2 versus the Defenders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 as the Nittany Lions wrap up the 2022-23 season on the road against Lancaster Bible College in United East Conference action.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
