Abington Splits DH with WPI to Close Out Spring Break Trip

Auburndale, Fla. – The Penn State Abington baseball team closed out its Spring Break Trip with a doubleheader split with Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational in Auburndale, Fla.  The Engineers took the opener by the score of 16-14, while the Nittany Lions won game two, 18-14.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* WPI scored five runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to rally to defeat the Nittany Lions after trailing 13-3 earlier in the game.  A grand slam by Kyle Johns highlighted the fifth for the Engineers, while back-to-back two-run doubles in the sixth by Jeffrey Brennan and Joe Salvon produced the go-ahead runs. 
 
* Abington scored 13 runs within the first three innings of the game.  Senior Zach Morales connected on his first home run of the season with a two-run blast in the first inning.  Senior Montana Milward launched his first home run on the year to lead off the second inning which led to a six-run frame for the Nittany Lions.  Six different players drove in runs in the inning.
 
* In the third inning Abington added another five runs.  Junior Justin Fogel, Morales and junior Tim Petrucelli each recorded back-to-back-to-back run scoring hits to give the Nittany Lions a 13-3 lead.
 
* WPI cut the lead to 13-6 in the fourth before its 10-run rally over the next two innings.  Salvon recorded a two-run homer in the fourth.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Morales finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs and five RBI; one shy of his career-high.  His home run in the first inning marked the 14th of his career as he is now ranked second in the program's record book for most home runs. 
 
* Petrucelli had a 3-for-4 game at the plate with three runs and two RBI.
 
* Senior Josh Baar also had three hits in the game as he finished 3-for-5 with an RBI.
 
* Senior Sean Doherty tied his career-high with three hits (3-6) to go along with three runs.
 
* For WPI, Salvon went 2-for-2 with three runs and five RBI, while Johns finished 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* There was no shortage of runs or hits in the night cap as well.  Abington led the game off with a two-run frame to jump out to a 2-0 lead.  Fogel and Morales each had run scoring doubles in the inning.
 
* Abington increased its lead to 6-0 after plating four runs in the third.  The first six batters in the inning all reached base leading to the four runs.  The Nittany Lions also scored a run in the fourth to make it a 7-1 game.
 
* However, in the bottom of the fourth WPI exploded for eight runs to take the lead at 9-7.  A three-run double by Jeffrey Brennan ended up tying the game at 7-7.  He would later score on a bases loaded hit by pitch. 
 
* The Engineers' did not last long as Abington rallied for seven runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead at 13-9. Baar tied the game at 9-9 with a single to center field before Milward stepped up and delivered a two-run double down the leftfield line five Abington an 11-9 lead. 
 
* WPI responded in the bottom of the fifth with five runs to tie the game at 14-14. 
 
* Abington grabbed the lead back in the sixth, this time for good.  With the bases loaded and noboday out, Wilward cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-center field.  The clutch hit gave Abington a 17-14 lead.  The Nittany Lions tacked on another run in the seventh thanks to a solo home run by Fogel.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Milward finished the game 2-for-3 with a run a six RBI tying his career-high.
 
* With his 3-for-4 performance at the plate, Fogel recorded his 100th career hit with his solo home run in the seventh inning.  He also scored three runs and drove in three.
 
* Sophomore Eric Stradling reached base four times as he went 1-for-3 with three walks.  He scored twice and drove in a run.
 
* Petrucelli finished 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI, while Morales went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and WPI.

Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 14 as the Nittany Lions host Gwynedd Mercy University in the team's home opener.  First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at Alverthorpe Park.
