Abington Splits with Wildcats as Hightower K’s 10 in Night Cap

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team split its first United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader of the season against visiting Penn College on Friday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park. The Wildcats took the opener, 13-7, before the Nittany Lions salvaged the doubleheader with a convincing 10-2 victory.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* After Penn College opened the top half of the first with a pair of runs, the Nittany Lions exploded for six runs off six hits in the bottom of the inning.  The first five batters all reached base, including four straight base hits to start the inning.  Senior Montana Milward highlighted the inning with a two-run single, while senior Sean Doherty capped the scoring with a run scoring double to make the score 6-2.
 
* Two innings later the Wildcats erupted for a seven-run frame to regain the lead at 8-6.  Shane Price jumpstarted the rally with a three-run home run after the first two batters in the inning reached base via walks.  Price would later force home a run with a bases loaded walk for his fourth RBI of the inning.
 
* Penn College tacked on a run in the top half of the fourth when Tyler Rudolph led the inning off with a home run.  The Nittany Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when Doherty scored on a Wildcat fielding error.  Doherty led the inning off with a walk.
 
* The Wildcats added three more runs in the top half of the fifth when Rudolph connected on his second home run of the game. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Milward finished the game 2-for-3 with a team-high two RBI. 
 
* Doherty was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.  He also reached base twice on walks. 
 
* Sophomore Eric Stradling also had multiple hits in the game with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.  He also scored a run.
 
* For Penn College, Price went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI, while Rudolph went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI, including his two home runs.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, senior Brandon Hightower held Penn College to just four hits through seven innings. His only blemish came in the top half of the first when the Wildcats scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead to start the game.
 
* The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when junior Tim Petrucelli blasted a three-run home run over the right field fence to give Abington a 3-1 lead.  It marked his fourth home run of the season.
 
* Two innings later the Abington offense put the game away with a five-run sixth inning.  Junior Justin Fogel led the inning off with his third home run of the season. Including Fogel, five different players drove in runs in the inning.  The Nittany Lions took advantage of four walks by Wildcat pitchers.
 
* Petrucelli gave the Nittany Lions double-digit runs as he drove in a pair with a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Hightower (2-0) earned his second win of the season as he struck out 10 batters recording double-digit strikeouts in back-to-back starts.  In 20.1 innings pitched this season, Hightower has yet to yield an earned run and has limited opposing batters to just seven hits. 
 
* Petrucelli tied his career-high with five RBI in the game.  He finished 2-for-4 with two runs.  His fourth inning home run marked the 12th of his career.
 
* Fogel finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.  His solo home run in the sixth inning was career home run number 13.
 
* Milward had multiple hits again as he went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
 
* For Penn College, Price went 1-for-3 with a double and accounted for the team's lone run scoring hit.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 23rd and 24th match ups between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2015 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 16-8 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.

Abington and Penn College with wrap up its three-game series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Alverthorpe Park.
