Abington Drops Doubleheader at Neumann

Aston, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Neumann University by the scores of 5-4 and 5-0 on Friday afternoon at Bruder Field.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  The Nittany Lions scored two runs on a pair of wild pitches and sophomore Hailey Gamble drove in the team's third run.
 
* The score remained 3-0 until the top half of the fifth when the Nittany Lions tacked on another run to increase the lead to 4-0.  Senior Maddie Duffy drove in senior Jenna Gorman with a single up the middle.  Gorman reached base earlier in the inning with a base hit. 
 
* In the bottom of the sixth the Knights finally broke through and scored three runs to come within a run of tying the game at 4-3.  Maddie Tice came through with a two-run single in the inning.
 
* In the final inning, Ashley Leicht reached base on a one-out double for the Knights.  The very next batter, Kristen Pagliaro, connected on an inside the park walk-off home run to give Neumann a 5-4 victory.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
*  Freshman Emily Foxhill went 2-for-3 in the game for the Nittany Lions.  Sophomore Grace Renninger also had multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-2 along with a pair of sacrifice hits. 
 
* Duffy (1-for-2) and Gamble each drove in a run.
 
* Sophomore Gretchen Yanss (3-2) struck out eight batters; one shy of her career and season-high.  She held Neumann scoreless the first five innings.
 
* For Neumann, Pagliaro went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Tice went 1-for-1 with two RBI in her pinch-hit at-bat.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In the latter game, Neumann scored a run in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Pagliaro.  The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Knights added four runs to increase their lead to 5-0.  Elizabeth Shire had a two-run double to drive in the first two runs in the inning.  She would later score on a throwing error by Abington along with Tice.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Duffy, Gamble and freshman Jill Thomas each had a hit in the game for the Nittany Lions.
 
* Thomas (1-1) went five innings in the pitching circle as she held the Knights to one run on one hit.  She finished the game with three strikeouts.
 
* For Neumann, Ashlynne Scardino (3-3) earned the win as she limited the Nittany lions to three hits in a complete-game performance.  She also struck out three batters. Shire finished the game 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth and sixth match ups between Abington and Neumann since 2021.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-5 versus the Knights in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 21 as the Nittany Lions host Delaware Valley University in a non-conference doubleheader in the team's home opener.  Game one is set for 3 p.m. at Huntingdon Field.
