Abington Sweeps DelVal in Home Opener

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team came away with a doubleheader sweep against visiting Delaware Valley University in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  The Nittany Lions took game one by the score 9-5 and completed the sweep with an 11-7 victory in the night cap.  Game two was called with one out in the top half of the sixth inning due to darkness.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie.  The Nittany Lions scored all five runs with two outs in the inning.  With the bases loaded, senior Jenna Gorman cleared the bases the with double.  Abington reloaded the bases when sophomore Gretchen Yanss walked and senior Maddie Duffy was hit by a pitch.  Senior Hailey Gamble delivered a two-run double to center field to make it a 9-4 game.
 
* The Aggies scored a run in the bottom of the inning but Yanss struck out the final batter to register the complete game victory.  Yanss (4-2) earned her team-leading fourth win of the season as she struck out seven batters in the game.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Gorman finished the game 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI, while Gamble was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
 
* Sophomore Callie Chambers went 2-for-3 in the game, including a run scoring triple in the fourth inning.
 
* For DelVal, Madison Donnelly was 2-for-2 with a run and two walks, while Sierra Ripka finished 2-for-4 with a run.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington erupted for eight runs in the opening inning as the first seven batters in the inning reached base.  The Nittany Lions collected five hits in the inning and took advantage of a pair of walks.  Sophomore Grace Renninger highlighted the inning with a two-run triple and scored twice in the inning.  Six different batters drove in runs.
 
* DelVal scored three times in the top half of the second to cut the Abington lead to 8-3.  The Nittany Lions got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning to increase their advantage to 9-3.
 
* The Aggies scored another run in the third when Brubaker doubled in Bailey Smith to make the score 9-4.  However, Abington responded yet again when freshman Jonalynn Hamilton connected on her first career home run.  Hamilton launched a leadoff homer over the left-center field fence to give the Nittany Lions their 10th run of the game.
 
* DelVal made things interesting in the fourth with three runs in the inning to come within three runs of the Abington lead at 10-7.  The Nittany Lions added some breathing room in the bottom of the inning when Hamilton drove in freshman Jill Thomas with a single down the left field line.
 
* The game was called due to darkness in the top half of the sixth inning with one out and a runner on third for the Aggies.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Hamilton finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and a season-high three RBI.  Her third inning home run marked the first of her collegiate career.
 
* Yanss went 3-for-4, while Gorman finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
 
* Thomas scored a pair of runs and earned her second win of the season with 2.1 innings of relief.  Thomas allowed just two earned runs on two hits while striking out two.
 
* For DelVal, Donnelly (1-3), Brubaker (1-2) and Tori Bockrath (1-3) accounted for the team's three hits.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 12th and 13th match ups between Abington and Delaware Valley since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-4 versus the Aggies in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, March 23 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Rosemont College in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 5 p.m.
