Abington Picks Up 5-4 Victory at Alvernia

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team came away with a 5-4 victory at Alvernia University in non-conference action on Monday afternoon at Angelica Park.  The win marks the fifth of the season for the Nittany Lions matching last year's win total.

How It Happened
 
* Abington jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the match after doubles competition.  At first doubles, the tandem of sophomore Andrew Brown and Tim Belotserkovsky outlasted Alvernia's Lucas Berger and Jayden Lewis at first doubles, 8-7.  Brown and Belotserkovsky won the tiebreak with a score of 7-5. 
 
* Abington was also victorious at third doubles as sophomore Kyle Elliott and freshman Nick Talarico came away with an 8-5 win over Dylan Boltz and Benjamin Foster.
 
* The Nittany Lions trailed the match 4-2 as the Golden Wolves took points at fourth, second and third singles matches.  At first singles, Brown kept Abington alive as he defeated Berger in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 to bring the Nittany Lions within a point of tying the match. 
 
* Talarico tied the match with his fifth singles victory over Foster.  Talarico won the first set by the score of 6-0 and then clinch the point with a 6-1 victory in set two.  The win marked his fifth straight singles triumph. 
 
* Abington clinched the match after sophomore Jeevesh Gupta won his sixth singles competition over Boltz. Gupta gave the Nittany Lions their fifth point of the match with a straight sets victory winning 6-3, 6-1.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Alvernia.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, March 24 as the Nittany Lions host Saint Elizabeth University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 2 p.m. at the Abington Tennis Courts.
