Abington Swept by Harrisburg in United East Opener

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped its first United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader of the season as Penn State Harrisburg came away with a pair of victories on Wednesday afternoon at Huntingdon Field. Harrisburg took game one by the score of 6-3 and went on to win game two, 12-2, in five innings.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Harrisburg struck first in the opener when Emma Einarson drove in a pair of runs with a double right field in the second inning.  Lauren Hess also recorded an RBI in the inning on a squeeze bunt to give Harrisburg a 3-0 lead.
 
* Harrisburg increased its lead to 5-0 in the top half of the fourth after a two-run double by Madeline English. 
 
* Abington got on the board in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a run scoring single by sophomore Callie Chambers.  Abington made it a 5-2 game in the bottom of the fifth when senior Jenna Gorman drove in sophomore Grace Renninger with a double to right-center field. 
 
* Harrisburg tacked on a run in the top of the seventh to increase its lead to 6-2.  Leah Macaluso recorded an RBI double to account for the run.
 
* In the bottom of the seventh, Abington cut the deficit down to 6-3 with another run scoring hit by Chambers.  Freshman Jonalynn Hamilton followed with a base hit to bring the tying run to the plate.  However, Harrisburg's Carissa Yeager retired the next batter to halt a potential comeback by Abington.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Sophomore Gretchen Yanss (4-3) went the distance for Abington as she struck out a career-high 10 batters.  Her final strikeout in the seventh inning against Einarson marked her 100th of her career.  Yanss is the sixth player in program history to reach the 100-career strikeout milestone. 
 
* Chambers went 2-for-4 with a team-high two RBI.
 
* Hamilton also had multiple hits in the game finishing 2-for-4 with a double.
 
* For Harrisburg, Mackenzie Sawdey (4-3) earned the win as she went five innings.  She allowed two runs on six hits while striking out 10 batters.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Harrisburg scored three runs to open the top half of the first inning.  However, Abington responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 3-2 game.  Sophomore Drew Liss led the inning off with an infield hit and was followed by a run scoring triple by Renninger.  Renninger later scored on a ground out by senior Hailey Gamble.
 
* In the second inning Harrisburg scored two runs off a two-run triple by English.  The visitors would go on to break the game open in the third with a six-run frame.  Steph Reider highlighted the inning with a three-run triple that gave Harrisburg a 10-2 lead.  Reider then scored on a base hit by Rylee Martinez.
 
* Harrisburg capped the scoring in the top half of the fourth when Krys Moore connected on a solo home run.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Renninger finished the game 1-for-3 with a run and a run scoring triple. 
 
* Liss went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
 
* For Harrisburg, Madelyn Lehigh went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, while Reider finished 1-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Kierstyn Smith improved to 4-0 as she went five innings allowing just two earned runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 21st and 22nd match ups between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 10-12 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, March 31 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Lancaster Bible College in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
