Abington Launches Three Home Runs in 13-10 Win Over Wells

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team took the opening game of a three-game series against Wells College by the score of 13-10 in United East Conference (UEC) action on Friday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.

How It Happened
 
* Abington jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning when senior Zach Morales drove in junior Justin Fogel with a two-out single.  Fogel reached with a base hit prior and advanced to second base on a wild pitch during Morales' at-bat to get into scoring position.
 
* In the top half of the third Wells broke through with a three-run inning to take a 3-1 lead.  Three different players drove in runs, including a run scoring double by Aaron Izquierdo.
 
* The Wells' lead didn't last long as the Nittany Lions responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.  After a run scoring single by junior Tim Petrucelli, senior Montana Milward drilled a shot over the left-center field fence for a three-run homer to give Abington a 5-3 lead. 
 
* The Express scored a run in the fourth to make it a one-run game at 5-4.  However, Abington struck again with another big inning plating three more runs in the bottom part of the frame.  Fogel delivered a run scoring single for the inning's first run, while Milward came through with a two-run hit later in the inning to make the score 8-4.
 
* Abington added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull ahead 12-4.  Fogel and Morales connected on back-to-back home runs.  Fogel launched a three-run home to right field, while Morales followed two pitches later with a blast over the right field fence.
 
* Wells cut the Abington lead down to 12-9 in the top half of the sixth when the Express scored five runs in the inning.  Zach Odum highlighted the inning with a two-run base hit.
 
* In the eighth, Zach Young drove in a run for the Express to make it a 12-10 game.  However, Abington responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning to reestablish its three-run lead.  Fogel connected on a double to center field driving in senior Sean Doherty who reached on an infield hit.
 
* Milward came in to pitch in the bottom of the ninth to close the game.  After allowing a leadoff single, Milward forced the next batter to ground into a routine double-play.  He then struck out the following batter to seal the victory for the Nittany Lions.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Fogel finished the game 5-for-6 as he set a new career-high with hits in a game.  He also scored four runs and tied his career and season-high with five RBI.  His fifth inning home run marked the fourth of the season and the 14th of his career.
 
* Milward also drove in five runs; one shy of his career and season-highs. He was 2-for-2 at the plate with three walks.  His three-run homer in the third marked his second of the season.  Milward also recorded his third career save after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
 
* Morales went 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBI and two walks.  His solo shot was the 15th of his career and second on the season. 
 
* Doherty finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and three runs. 
 
*  Sophomore Greg Wiley (2-2) picked up his second win of the season after going six strong innings and striking out a pair.
 
* For Wells, Jonathan Haines went 3-for-4, while Zach Odum finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.  Izquierdo also had three hits as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 12th meeting between Abington and Wells since the start of the 2018 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 12-0 against the Express in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington and Wells will resume its three-game series on Sunday, March 26 with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.  The two games were originally scheduled for Saturday but were moved with the anticipation of a rainy Saturday set for the area.
