Abington Completes Series Sweep of Wells in Lopsided Victories

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team combined for 25 runs and 36 hits in a United East Conference (DH) doubleheader against Wells College on Sunday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park. The Nittany Lions took game one by the score of 18-2 and then completed the series sweep with a 17-3 triumph in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning.  Junior Justin Fogel and senior Montana Milward each had run scoring hits to put the Nittany Lions on the board first.
 
* Abington blew the game wide open in the bottom of the third as the Nittany Lions sent 14 batters to the plate resulting in 10 runs off nine hits.  Abington had six extra base hits in the inning, including five doubles and a home run.  Fogel went 2-for-2 in the inning with a double and a two-run home run.  Junior Tim Petrucelli and senior Josh Baar each had two-run doubles.
 
* Leading 12-0, the Nittany Lions added a run in the fourth when Fogel drew a bases loaded walk.  The team also tacked on a single run in the fifth when senior Louis Rossner drove in a run.  Abington capped the scoring with a four-run sixth inning. After a run scoring double by senior Zach Morales, Petrucelli connected on a three-run homer to give Abington an 18-2 lead.
 
* Wells scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Zach Odum and Aaron Izquierdo. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Milward (1-1) earned his first career win in his first career start.  He went five strong innings holding Wells to just two runs on five hits while striking out two. Milward also went 3-for-5 on the offensive side with one run and two RBI.
 
* Senior Sean Doherty was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate to go along with three runs and two walks.
 
* Fogel was also perfect at the plate as he finished 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI.  His third inning homerun was his fifth on the season and 15th of his career. 
 
* Petrucelli added another perfect stat line as he went 2-for-2 with three runs and tied his career-high with five RBI.  He also walked three times.
 
* Morales finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles while scoring three times.
 
* Baar also had multiple hits in the game as he finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. 
 
* Sophomore Jamie Burkhart pitched two shutout innings of relief to close out the game.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
*  In game two, the Abington offense gave starting pitcher, junior Alex Margot, all the support he would need with a nine-run first inning.  The Nittany Lion offense continued its assault on Wells' pitching with seven hits and nine runs in the opening frame.  The first three batters in the inning reached base and Morales drove them all in with a three-run double.  After the next two batters were retired, Rossner came through with an RBI double and scored on a base hit by junior Eric Rollins.  Two batters later Doherty delievered a two-run double to left-center field for his second hit of the inning scoring two on the play.  Fogel then capped the inning with a two-run double of his own to give the Nittany Lions a 9-0 lead.
 
* Abington was held scoreless until the sixth inning when the Nittany Lions scored a pair of runs.  The team then tacked on six additional runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Barr, Fogel and Milward each drove in a pair of runs in the inning.
 
* Wells scored a run in the fourth and then added another in the fifth when Max Odum led the inning off with a home run to right field.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Doherty went 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBI as he finished the doubleheader 7-for-9 with six runs.
 
* Fogel added four RBI as he went 2-for-3 with a run. 
 
* Morales also drove in four runs as he finished 2-for-6 with two runs scored.
 
* Baar went 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBI, while Milward finished 2-for-6 with three RBI. 
 
* Margot (2-2) picked up his second victory of the season after holding Wells to just one earned run in five innings of work.  Margot struck out six batters; one shy of his season-high.
 
* The Abington bullpen allowed just one run in four innings of relief.  Sophomore Owen Lynch held Wells to three hits in three scoreless innings while striking out two.  Burkhart pitched the ninth as he struck out three batters to close out the game.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 13th and 14th matchups between Abington and Wells since the start of the 2018 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 14-0 versus the Express in the all-time series.
 
Fun Facts
 
* Each Abington starter in the lineup had at least one hit and one run in both games.
 
* With his fifth home run of the season in game one, Fogel is now tied for second all-time with Morales in home runs with 15.  Petrucelli, who blasted his team-leading sixth home run in game one, is one behind with 14 career home runs.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, March 27 as the Nittany Lions host national ranked No. 11 Rowan University in a non-conference contest.  First pitch from Alverthorpe Park is set for 3:30 p.m.
