Abington Sweeps Lancaster Bible in United East DH

Lancaster, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team picked up a pair of road victories as the Nittany Lions swept Lancaster Bible College in a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon.  Abington won game one by the score of 2-1 before completing the sweep with an 8-0 victory in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* With the game tied 1-1 in the top half of the seventh, freshman Emily Foxhill delivered a two-out triple to right field to score fellow freshman Jill Thomas to give the Nittany Lions their first lead of the game at 2-1.  Thomas led the inning off with a base hit to left.
 
* In the bottom of the seventh, the Chargers had the tying run and potential winning-run in scoring position with two outs.  Sophomore Gretchen Yanss was able to retire the final batter of the game forcing a fly out to center field to give the Nittany Lions the come-from-behind victory.
 
* Abington tied the game at 1-1 in the top half of the fifth thanks to back-to-back doubles by Thomas and sophomore Callie Chambers
 
* Lancaster Bible scored its lone run in the opening inning when Chloe King drove in a run with a single to left field.  The Chargers led 1-0 until Abington tied the game in the fifth.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Yanss (5-3) earned her fifth win of the season after another strong performance in the pitching circle.  After setting a career-high in strikeouts with 10 in her previous start, Yanss topped that mark with an 11-strikeout performance against the Chargers.
 
* Thomas finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate and accounted for both runs for the Nittany Lions.
 
* Foxhill and Chambers each went 1-for-3 with run scoring extra base hits.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Alyssa Hamilton (3-3) went the distance as she struck out four batters in seven innings.  Adalyn Steiner went 2-for-3 in the game with a double.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In the night cap Abington supplied starting pitcher Emmalee Myerholtz all the support she would need in the third inning.  The Nittany Lions scored the game's first runs with two in the frame.  Yanss recorded an RBI single scoring sophomore Grace Renninger.  She would go on to score later in the inning on a wild pitch to give Abington a 2-0 lead.
 
* Myerholtz (1-1) earned her first career victory as well as her first career shutout after holding the Chargers to just two hits in a complete seven-inning game.  Myerholtz struck out five batters in the game.
 
* Abington added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before putting the game out of reach in the seventh with a four-spot.  Renninger highlighted the inning with a two-run triple.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Renninger and Yanss each drove in a pair of runs in the win.  Renninger finished 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Yanss went 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Sophomore Drew Liss had a multiple hit game as she went 2-for-4 with two runs. 
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Sheyenne King and Noelle Martin each had a hit in the game.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 27th and 28th matchups between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 21-7 versus the Chargers in the all-time series. Abington has won six of the last seven games in the series.

Abington returns to action on Saturday, April 1 as the Nittany Lions visit Gallaudet University in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 1 p.m.
