Abington Launches 11 Home Runs in Doubleheader Sweep at LBC

Lancaster, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team played longball at Lancaster Bible College as the Nittany Lions launched 11 home runs in a doubleheader sweep against the Chargers in United East Conference (UEC) action on Friday afternoon at the LBC Baseball Field.  The Nittany Lions won game one by the score of 9-6 and took game two with a 19-8 triumph.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a pair of home runs.  Senior Sean Doherty led the game off with a solo home run; the first of his career.  After senior Josh Baar and junior Justin Fogel reached base, senior Zach Morales stepped to the plate and blasted a three-run shot to give Abington a 4-0 advantage.
 
* Lancaster Bible scored twice in the bottom of the first after Harrison Hobdy and Jack Nance drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to make it a 4-2 game.  However, Abington got both those runs back in the top half of the second Baar came through with a two-run homer for his first long ball of the season.
 
* Leading 6-2 in the fourth inning, the home run would play a factor in the inning.  Morales connected on his second home run in the game with a two-run shot.  Junior Tim Petrucelli followed with a home run of his own to give the Nittany Lions a 9-2 lead.
 
* Lancaster Bible added two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another pair in the seventh after a two-run double by Madagan. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Morales finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and five RBI.  His two home runs resulted in his second career multi home run game. 
 
* Baar finished 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Doherty went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. 
 
* Fogel also had multiple hits in the game as he went 2-for-3 with two runs.
 
* Sophomore Greg Wiley (3-2) picked up his third win of the season as he fanned seven in four innings of work.  His seven strikeouts tied his season-high.
 
* Sophomore Owen Lynch pitched two perfect innings of relief while striking out three batters.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Madagan went 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Brian Coburn went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* After hitting five home runs in the opener, the Nittany Lions did one batter in the night cap, connecting on six home runs. 
 
* Trailing 5-0 entering the third inning, the Nittany Lions cut the deficit down to three runs after plating a pair of runs in the inning.  Baar ripped his second home run of the day with a solo shot for Abington's first run.  Later in the inning Morales drove in Fogel with a base hit.
 
* Abington tied the game in the fourth when Doherty launched a three-run homer; his second of the day and of his career.  The Nittany Lions grabbed their first lead of the game when Fogel led the fifth inning off with his sixth home run of the season.  Fogel also had a run scoring single in the sixth to give Abington a 7-5 advantage.
 
* Lancaster Bible struck back in the bottom of the sixth when Dylan Witkowksi hit his second three-run home run of the game to give the Chargers the lead once again at 8-7.  Witkowski also hit a three-run homer in the second inning.
 
* In the eighth inning the Nittany Lions regained the lead; this time for good.  Fogel tied the game at 8-8 with a run scoring single.  Morales then came through with a two-run double.  Later in the inning the Nittany Lions scored two runs off errors by the Chargers before sophomore Steve Corrado capped the scoring with a solo home run; the first of his career.
 
* Abington scored another six runs in the ninth inning.  Petrucelli and Corrado each hit two run homers in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Fogel was a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate as he scored four runs and drove in another three. 
 
* Morales capped his day with a 3-for-5 performance with a run and four RBI.  He totaled nine RBI between the two games.
 
* Petrucelli finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI.  His ninth inning home run marked the eighth of the season tying his career-high.  In two seasons Petrucelli has totaled 16 home runs; third-most in program history. 
 
* Doherty tied his career-high by scoring four times in the game.  He finished 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two walks. 
 
* Corrado connected on his first two home runs of his career in his only two at-bats in the game.  He finished 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBI. 
 
* Sophomore Alex Margot struck out a season-high eight batters in 5.2 innings. 
 
* Lynch added another 3.1 scoreless innings to his day as he picked up the win in relief.  He allowed just one hit and struck out three in relief.  For the day, Lynch pitched 5.1 scoreless innings with six strikeouts while allowing just one hit.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Witkowski went 2-for-4 with three runs and six RBI, while Blake Greenly went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
It's Outta Heeeeere!
The 11 combined home runs hit by Abington marked the most in a doubleheader since the Nittany Lions hit 10 in a doubleheader at Guilford to open the 2022 season.  
 
Going… Going… Gone!
Three current players rank in the top-three in the program's all-time home run list.  Morales is currently second with 17 career home runs, while Fogel and Petrucelli are tied for third with 16 career home runs each. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 26th and 27th matchups between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 22-5 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.  Abington has won the last nine games in the series.
 
Next Up
Abington and Lancaster Bible will wrap up the three-game season series on Saturday, April 1.  First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at the LBC Baseball Field.
