Abington Splits with Gallaudet in United East Doubleheader

Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader with Gallaudet University on Saturday afternoon at the Gallaudet Softball Complex.  The Nittany Lions took the opener with a 3-0 victory before the Bison closed out the doubleheader with a 7-0 win in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington scored a run in each of the first three innings to account for the game's run support.  Sophomore Grace Renninger led the game off with a double to left-center field and would later score with a steal of home plate. 
 
* In the second, Renninger drove in junior Callie Chambers with a base hit to left field.  Chambers reached base to lead off the inning after getting hit by a pitch.
 
* Senior Hailey Gamble made it a 3-0 game when she scored in the third inning on a passed ball.  Gamble led the inning off with a walk.
 
* Sophomore Gretchen Yanss (6-3) limited the Gallaudet offense to just three hits in the game as she earned the complete game victory.  Yanss struck out seven batters in her first shutout of the season.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Renninger finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
 
* Senior Maddie Duffy and freshman Emily Foxhill each had a hit for the Nittany Lions.
 
* Gamble reached base twice with two walks.
 
* For Gallaudet, Elaine Swecker, Emma Giuntoli and Caitlyn Smith all went 1-for-3 in the game.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* A six-run first inning by Gallaudet turned out to be the difference in the game.  The first six batters in the inning reached for the Bison.  Lacey Drolsbaugh, Giuntoli and Smith all had run scoring hits in the inning.
 
* The score remained 6-0 until the fifth inning when the Bison tacked on another run with an RBI single by Danyeal Davis.
 
* Prior to the top of the fifth inning, the game was halted due to a one-hour lightning delay.  Play resumed at 5:45 p.m.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Sophomore Drew Liss went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, while senior Jenna Gorman finished the game 1-for-3.
 
* Yanss pitched five innings of relief as she struck out eight batters.  She finished the doubleheader with 15 strikeouts in 12 total innings.
 
* For Gallaudet, Smith finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.  Drolsbaugh (2-1) picked up her second win of the season with a complete game effort.  She struck out six and allowed just three hits.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 35th and 36th matchups between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 30-6 versus the Bison in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, April 7 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Wells College in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
