Abington Falls to Mount Union Down in Florida

Auburndale, Fla. – The Penn State Abington baseball team suffered a 14-4 defeat against the University of Mount Union in non-conference action on Monday at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational in Auburndale, Fla.

How It Happened
 
* Senior Louis Rossner gave Abington an early 2-0 lead with a two-out two-run single in the opening inning.  However, the Purple Raiders responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 2-2. 
 
* Abington regained the lead in the third inning when junior Tim Petrucelli scored on a base hit by fellow junior Justin Fogel.  Petrucelli led the inning off with a double.
 
* Mount Union scored three runs in the fourth inning to steal the lead from the Nittany Lions.  Zack Mazza capped the inning with a two-run single to make the score 5-3. The Purple Raiders tacked on another run in the sixth to increase their lead to 6-3.
 
* The Nittany Lions cut the deficit down to 6-4 in the top of the eighth. Senior Montana Milward connected on a two-out single to drive in Fogel who doubled earlier in the inning.
 
* The Purple Raiders sealed the game in the bottom of the eighth with eight runs coming across the plate.  As a result, the 10-run mercy rule was put into play per rules by the RussMatt Baseball Invitational.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Fogel finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.  With his two hits, Fogel has hit safely in 24 straight games dating back to last season.  In four games thus far in Florida, Fogel is batting 9-for-18.
 
* Rossner also had multiple hits in the game as he finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
 
* For Mount Union, Mazza went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Andrew Witte went 3-for-6 with three runs and two RBI. Leo Fornara earned the win as he struck out 11 batters in seven innings of work.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Mount Union.
 
Next Up
Abington will resume play in Florida on Tuesday as the Nittany Lions face Russel Sage College in a single non-conference contest.  First pitch is set for 4:15 p.m.
