Abington Splits to Open 2023 Season in Myrtle Beach

Little River, S.C. – The Penn State Abington softball team opened the 2023 season at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic held in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Monday.  The Nittany Lions won their opener, 10-5, against Cedar Crest College before dropping the night cap, 9-0, to Gettysburg University.

How It Happened vs. Cedar Crest
 
* Abington scored three runs in each of the first two innings to open the game with a 6-0 advantage after two full frames.  Sophomore Hailey Gamble connected on a two-run triple in the first inning and later scored on a base hit by senior Megan Tomoney.  In the second, Gamble added two more RBI with a two-run single as she went on to finish the game with five RBI.  Freshman Jill Thomas also had a run scoring hit in the inning.
 
* The score remained 6-0 until the sixth inning when Cedar Crest broke through with a pair of runs to spoil the Nittany Lions' shutout bid.  However, Abington responded in the top of the seventh with four more runs to pull ahead even more at 10-2.  Sophomore Grace Renninger highlighted the inning with a two-run single with the bases loaded.  Gamble followed with her fifth RBI of the game before senior Maddie Duffy capped the scoring as she drew a bases loaded walk to score the team's 10th run of the game.
 
* Cedar Crest added three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make things interesting but did no further damage as the game ended at 10-5.

* Gamble finished the game 4-for-5 with a game-high five RBI.  She also scored a run and delivered a two-run triple. 
 
* Renninger went 2-for-4 at the plate with a game-high three runs.  She also drove in a pair and reached base three times. 
 
* Tomoney also had a multi-hit game as she finished 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
 
* Sophomore Gretchen Yanss earned the win as she went four scoreless innings allowing only three hits.  She also struck out two batters.
 
* For Cedar Crest, Renee Snyder went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Ashley Heller finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
How It Happened vs. Gettysburg
 
* Gettysburg scored a run in each of the first three innings versus the Nittany Lions.  The Bullets opened the game up in the fourth inning scoring four times to increase their lead to 8-0. Jess Campana had a two-run single to cap the scoring in the inning.
 
* Gettysburg added two more runs in the fifth inning when Giovanna Komst connected on a two-run single.
 
* Starting pitcher Megan Hughes (2-0) held the Nittany Lions to just three hits in five shutout innings.  Hughes finished the game with six strikeouts.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Senior Jenna Gorman along with Duffy and Renninger all went 1-for-2 at the plate for Abington.
 
* Gettysburg had five players with multiple hits, including Komst who finished 2-for-3 with three RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Cedar Crest and the first since the 2012 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-2 versus the Falcons.  Abington and Gettysburg were meeting for just the second time.  Both teams faced one another last year in Myrtle Beach with the Bullets winning, 10-5.
 
Next Up
Abington resumes play tomorrow with another pair of games against non-conference opponents. The Nittany Lions will face Cazenovia College at 1 p.m. and then close out the day against Clarks Summit University at 5 p.m.
