Abington Sweeps Fitchburg State at RussMatt Invitational

Auburndale, Fla. – The Penn State Abington baseball team completed a two-game sweep against Fitchburg State College in non-conference action at the RussMatt Baseball Invitational in Auburndale, Fla. at Lake Myrtle Park on Wednesday.  The Nittany Lions took game one by the score of 4-3 and then finished the night cap with an 8-4 triumph.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* With the score tied 2-2 in the top half of the seventh inning, sophomore Eric Stradling delivered a two-out two-run single to left-center field to give the Nittany Lions a 4-2 advantage.  Stradling's hit turned out to be the game winner, despite Fitchburg coming through with a run in the bottom of the inning, Sophomore Josh Henderson shut the door on the Falcons retiring the final two batters in the inning to preserve the win for the Nittany Lions.
 
* Abington scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to lead 2-0.  In the third, senior Josh Baar scored on an error, while senior Louis Rossner drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth to drive in a run.
 
* A pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning by the Falcons tied the game at 2-2.  Vincent Eramo and Adam Koza each had runs coring hits.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Sophomore Greg Wiley notched his first win of the season as he went six strong innings allowing just two runs on four hits.  He finished with a season-high seven strikeouts.
 
* Stradling finished the game 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Junior Justin Fogel recorded multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 at the plate extending his hitting streak to 26 straight games. 
 
* Henderson pitched an inning in relief as he earned his first career save.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In the night cap, Abington jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first four innings.  In the first, senior Zach Morales drove in Stradling with a single to right field for the game's first run.  The Nittany Lions added two runs in the third when junior Tim Petrucelli launched his first home run of the season to increase the lead to 3-0.  Abington added another run in the fourth when senior Sean Doherty scored on a wild pitch after leading the inning off with a base hit.
 
* Fitchburg's Liam Goldstein cut the deficit in half when he drove in a pair of runs in the top half of the fifth inning with a double down the left field line.
 
* Abington pulled further ahead in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run inning.  Petrucelli highlighted the frame with a two-run inside the park home run that gave Abington a 7-2 lead.  Prior to that, Fogel drove in a run with a base hit and would score on Petrucelli's four-bagger.  Later in the inning Rossner scored a run on a wild pitch.
 
* The Falcons scored two runs in the top half of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Nittany Lions held on to the 8-4 victory.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Petrucelli finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBI to go along with his two home runs. He now has 10 home runs in his Abington career.
 
* Fogel once again extended his hitting streak with a 1-for-3 performance.  He has now hit safely in 27 straight games.
 
* Redshirt sophomore Alex Margot earned his first victory at Abington as he went six innings allowing only two runs off two hits.  He struck out a season-high seven batters in the victory.
 
* Baar and senior Montant Milward each went 2-for-4 at the plate.  Stradling also had multiple hits as he finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
 
* For Fitchburg State, Goldstein went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second and third match ups between Abington and Fitchburg State. The Nittany Lions are now 2-1 versus the Falcons in the all-time series.  Fitchburg won the first-ever meeting between the two schools in 2020.
 
Next Up
Abington is off on Thursday but returns to action on Friday, March 10 as the Nittany Lions face St. John Fisher University in a non-conference contest down in Florida.  Game time is set for 10 a.m.
