Abington Takes Down Fighting Squirrels, 7-2

Staunton, Va. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team defeated Mary Baldwin University by the score of 7-2 in a non-conference match on the team's Spring Break Trip on Thursday.  The Nittany Lions improve to 3-1 on the season.

How It Happened
 
* Abington took two of three in doubles play to open the match with a 2-1 advantage.  At second doubles, sophomore Kyle Elliott and freshman Nick Talarico defeated Noah Knick and Luis Monjes with ease at 8-2.  Over at third doubles, sophomores Jeevesh Gupta and Harshvardhan Goel cruised to an 8-1 victory in their match against Adrian Reyes and Jeremiah Emmons-Mayo.
 
* In singles action, junior Josh Kurek picked up the win at first flight with a straight set victory over Eric Leyton.  Kurek won with scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
 
* Talarico won his third singles match against Luis Monjes after winning the tiebreaker, 10-7.  After winning the first set 6-0, Talarico dropped the second set to Monjes by the score of 6-4 to force a third set tiebreak.  With the tiebreak tied at 6-6, Talarico won four of the next five points to win the match. 
 
* In fourth singles, Gupta rallied back after losing a tough first set, 7-6.  He found himself trailing the second set, 2-1, but won five straight games to force the third set tiebreak.  Gupta won six of the first seven points in the tiebreak before winning the match 10-5.
 
* Elliott and freshman Alex Vylkov won their singles matches in straight sets.  Elliott finished off Reyes at fifth singles by the scores of 6-0 and 6-2, while Vylkov defeated Emmons-Mayo at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-2.
 
* The Fighting Squirrels earned points at first doubles and second singles.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Mary Baldwin.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, March 10 as the Nittany Lions wrap up their Spring Break Trip with a non-conference match at McDaniel College.  Match time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
