Abington Sweeps Wells to Pick Up Two United East Victories

Aurora, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington softball team traveled up to Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. and came away with a pair of United East Conference (UEC) victories on Friday afternoon at the Wells Turf Complex.  The Nittany Lions won game one 12-2 and followed with a 13-3 victory in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Sophomore Grace Renninger scored the game's first run in the opening inning to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 advantage.  Renninger led the inning off with a walk and eventually made her way around the bases before scoring on a passed ball.
 
* Abington took advantage of a pair of fielding errors by the Wells' defense to score two runs in the second to increase its lead to 3-0.  Freshman Jonalynn Hamilton recorded an RBI single in the inning.
 
* In the fourth, Abington scored three more times with sophomore Drew Liss coming through with a run scoring hit.  The Nittany Lions scored twice on passed balls in the inning.
 
* Leading 6-1 entering the fifth, the Nittany Lions put the game out of reach with a six-run inning.  Sophomore Hailey Gamble led the inning off with her first home run of the season. As the inning progressed, Abington loaded the bases which led to run scoring hits by Liss and freshman Emily Foxhill.  Renninger forced in a run after being hit by a pitch.  Senior Jenna Gorman capped the scoring with a two-run double.
 
* Wells scored single runs in the second and fifth innings. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Gamble finished the game 3-for-4 with a solo home run.  It marked her first of the season and third of her career.
 
* Liss went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and two RBI, while Hamilton finished with 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
 
* Renninger scored a game-high three runs with an RBI.
 
* Sophomore Gretchen Yanns (7-3) earned her seventh win of the season after holding Wells' batters to just two runs on three hits in five innings.  She finished with six strikeouts.
 
* For Wells, Sara Mattle recorded the team's lone RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* The Abington offense continued where it left off from game one with four runs in the first inning.  Gamble, senior Megan Tomoney and Yanss all drove in runs in the inning.
 
* The Nittany Lions scored single runs in the second and third to increase their lead to 6-0 before adding four runs in the fourth inning.  Four different players drove in runs in the inning. 
 
* Abington capped the scoring with three more runs in the fifth.  Yanss recorded her fourth hit of the game in the inning resulting in an RBI. 
 
* Wells scored its two runs in the fourth with a two-run single by Lauren Kimball. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Yanss finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and a career-high four RBI.
 
* Gamble totaled two runs and two RBI after going 2-for-4 at the plate.
 
* Tomoney also had multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.

* Renninger recorded two RBI in the game with a sacrifice fly and forcing in a run after getting hit with a pitch.
 
* Freshman Jill Thomas (3-2) held Wells to just two runs in four innings of work to earn her third win of the season.  Thomas finished with four strikeouts in the game.
 
* For Wells, Kimball went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth and 10th match ups between Abington and Wells since the start of the 2019 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 10-0 versus Wells in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 11 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Berks in a United East doubleheader at Huntingdon Field.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
