Abington Drops Pair to Berks

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a pair of United East Conference (EUC) contests to visiting Penn State Berks on Tuesday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  Berks took the doubleheader by the scores of 5-0 and 8-2.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* In the opener a four-run second inning by Berks turned out to be the difference maker in the game.  Savannah Wilson drove in the inning's first run with a two-out single.  Susan Duncan followed and reached base on a costly fielding error by Abington allowing two runners to score.  Duncan would go on to score on a double by Arizona Shreck.
 
* Berks' Briana Smith held Abington to just five hits in the game on her way to her seventh win of the season.  Smith finished the game with five strikeouts. 
 
* Berks added another run in the sixth inning when Duncan drove in Wilson with a double.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Sophomore Callie Chambers was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate to go along with a double.
 
* Sophomore Hailey Gamble (1-3) and freshman Emily Foxhill (1-3) also had hits for the Nittany Lions.
 
* For Berks, Wilson finished 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Duncan went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Berks opened the scoring in the first inning when Veronica Maryanski drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.  Berks would go on to extend its lead to 6-0 with a five-run third inning. Shreck and Maryanski each had run scoring doubles in the inning.

* Berks extended its lead to 8-0 with two runs in the fourth when Shreck singled up the middle to drive in a pair. 
 
* Abington got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Gretchen Yanss doubled to right-center field to drive in freshman Jill Thomas.  Abington scored another run in the bottom of the fifth with senior Jenna Gorman forcing in a run on a groundout.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)

* Freshman Jonalynn Hamilton went 2-for-3 with a run, while Foxhill finished 2-for-2 with a walk. 
 
* Chambers entered as a pinch-hitter and recorded another hit on the day to finish the doubleheader 4-for-4.
 
* For Berks, Shreck (5-2) earned the win in the pitching circle as she held Abington to just two runs in seven innings of work.  She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and three RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 46th and 47th matchups between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 7-40 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, April 14 as the Nittany Lions host Gallaudet University in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
