Abington Sweeps Gallaudet to Take Season Series

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team took two games from Gallaudet University after two strong pitching performances by sophomore Gretchen Yanss and freshman Jill Thomas in United East Conference (UEC) action on Friday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  The Nittany Lions won by the scores of 4-0 and 7-3 to improve to 7-5 in conference play.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington jumped out to an early lead after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Thomas drove in the game's first run with a double which scored senior Megan Tomoney.  Thomas would later score on a dropped fly ball that would have ended the inning but instead gave the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead.
 
* Abington doubled its lead in the fifth with two more runs with senior Jenna Gorman and Tomoney coming through with run scoring hits.
 
* The four runs were all Yanss would need as she held the Bison to just two hits in a complete game shutout performance.  She finished with six strikeouts and registered her eighth win of the season.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Gorman and Tomoney each went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the game.  Thomas finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. 
 
* For Gallaudet, Emma Giuntoli and Danyeal Davis recorded the two hits finished 1-for-3.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington once again struck first with sophomore Hailey Gamble driving in a first inning run with a triple to right-center field.  Gorman connected on a two-out single prior to set up the run scoring play.
 
* The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the Nittany Lions plated three runs to increase their lead to 4-0.  Freshman Jonalynn Hamilton highlighted the inning with a two-run single down the right field line. 
 
* Abington tacked on three more runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 7-0.  Tomoney came through with a run scoring double in the inning before Yanss capped the scoring with a two-run single.
 
* Gallaudet spoiled the Nittany Lions' shutout bid in the top of the seventh after scoring three runs.  Davis recorded a two-out two-run single in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Thomas went the distance to earn her fourth win of the season.  She finished the game allowing just three runs on five hits while striking out a season-high seven batters. Thomas also went 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs.
 
* Yanss finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI, while Hamilton went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
 
* Gamble and sophomore Drew Liss had multiple hits in the game.  Gamble went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Liss finished 2-for-4.
 
* For Gallaudet, Davis drove in a pair of runs with a pinch-hit appearance in the seventh inning.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 37th and 38th matchups between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 32-6 versus the Bison in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, April 17 as the Nittany Lions host Lancaster Bible College in a United East doubleheader.  The scheduled matchup was originally set for Saturday, however with the weather forecasted to bring rain to the area the two games were switched to Monday.  Game one will start at 3 p.m.
