Abington Flirts with No-Hitter and Launches Nine Home Runs in Doubleheader Sweep Over Seahawks

Jenkintown, Pa. – Redshirt sophomore Alex Margot took a no-hitter into the final frame of game one while the offense launched six home runs as the Penn State Abington baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep against visiting St. Mary's College (Md.) on Friday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.  The Nittany Lions won game one, 11-0, and finished with a 14-9 victory in game two of the United East Conference (UEC) twin bill.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Back-to-back home runs by juniors Tim Petrucelli and Justin Fogel gave Abington a 2-0 run after the first inning and supplied Margot with all the offense he would need in the game.
 
* Margot (3-2) silenced the Seahawks' bats through the first 6.2 innings.  With two outs in the top half of the seventh, St. Mary's Dan Weeden broke up the no-hitter with a double to right-center field.  Margot settled for an impressive one-hit shutout as he struck out the final batter for his season-high 12th strikeout. 
 
* In the bottom of the second the Nittany Lions launched three home runs, including another set of back-to-backers.  Sophomore Steve Corrado led the inning off with a solo shot for his third home run of the season.  Later in the inning Fogel connected on his second home run of the game with a three-run shot.  Senior Zach Morales followed next with a solo home for his sixth of the season.
 
* The Abington offense tacked on four more runs in the sixth.  Petrucelli blasted a three-run shot for his second home run of the game.  Senior Lou Rossner drove in the team's final run with a base hit to score Fogel.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Petrucelli finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI after connecting on two home runs marking his 11th and 12th home runs of the season.
 
* Fogel also hit two home runs for his 11th and 12th of the year as he went 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBI while drawing a pair of walks.
 
* Morales went 1-for-4 with his second inning home run marking his sixth of the season.
 
* Sophomore Eric Stradling went 2-for-3 with two runs, while senior Sean Doherty finished 2-for-4 with a run.
 
* For St. Mary's, Weeden went 1-for-3 with a double. 
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Trailing 8-6 entering the bottom of the sixth inning the Nittany Lions ripped off four runs to take their first lead of the game since the opening inning. Morales and senior Josh Baar recorded back-to-back run scoring singles in the inning.
 
* St. Mary's made it a one run game at 10-9 after scoring a run in the top half of the eighth.  However, another four-run frame by the Nittany Lions extended their lead to 14-9.  Fogel hit a solo home run before Baar connected on a two-run homer in the inning.  Junior Eric Rollins drove in a run later in the inning with a double to fight field.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Fogel blasted two more home runs to finish the day with four as he now has 13 on the year.  He also extended his hitting streak to 20 games after going 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs and three RBI.
 
* Morales went 3-for-5 with three runs and one RBI.
 
* Baar also had three hits as he finished 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI.  His eighth inning home run marked his third of the season.
 
* Rossner drove in three runs as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the game.
 
* Senior Brandon Hightower struck out 11 batters; one shy of his season and career-highs in 5.2 innings.
 
* For St. Mary's, George Berbakos went 1-for-4 with three RBI, while Chase O'Dell finished 2-for-4 with both his hits being home runs.  He scored three runs and drove in three.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the fourth and fifth matchups between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of last season.  The Nittany Lions are 5-0 in the all-time series with the Seahawks.
 
Next Up
Abington and St. Mary's will wrap up the three-game series on Saturday with a single game set to start at 11 a.m. at Alverthorpe Park.
