Abington Falls to St. Mary’s in High Scoring Affair

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game United East Conference (UEC) series versus St. Mary's College (Md.) by the score of 16-14 on Saturday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.

How It Happened
 
* St. Mary's scored eight runs in the top of the half of the eighth inning to erase a six-run deficit and gain a two-run lead.  The Seahawks scored three runs on three straight free passes by the Nittany Lions followed by a grand slam by Cole Tarleton to cap the scoring. St. Mary's finished the inning ahead 16-14.
 
* In the bottom of the eighth, the first two batters reached base on walks.  St. Mary's brought in Trevor Smith to pitch, and he ended up retiring the next three batters to get out of the inning.  Smith allowed a leadoff runner but retired the next three to register the save.
 
* The Seahawks scored the game's first run in the top half of the third to take a 1-0 lead.  Abington answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to grab its first lead of the game at 3-1.  Junior Justin Fogel drove in a pair of runs with a two-run single.
 
* A three-run fourth gave St. Mary's a 4-3 advantage as Gavin Wathen hit a two-run homer in the inning.  The Nittany Lions responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-run homer by junior Eric Rollins to give Abington a 5-4 advantage.
 
* Abington extended its lead to 9-4 after a four-run fifth inning that featured a two-run single by sophomore Steve Corrado
 
* The Seahawks came within one run of tying the game in the top half of the sixth after scoring four runs. The Nittany Lions countered with a run in the bottom of the inning off a solo home run by junior Justin Fogel.  Abington followed with a four-run seventh to increase their lead to 14-8.  Senior Josh Baar led the seventh off with his fourth home run of the season. Sophomore Eric Stradling drew a bases loaded walk to drive in a run. Later in the inning Fogel drove in a pair with a double to left field.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Fogel went 3-for-6 in the game to go along with his 14th home run of the season.  He finished the game with five RBI tying his season and career-highs.  With his sixth inning home run it marked the 24th of his career; second most in program history. He also extended his hitting streak to 21 games.
 
* Rollins finished 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI as he launched his second home run of the season in the fourth inning. 
 
* Baar also had multiple hits in the game as he went 1-for-4 with two runs and an RBI with his fourth home run of the season and second of the series.
 
* For St. Mary's, Tarleton finished 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI, while O'Dell went 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the sixth meeting between Abington and St. Mary's since last season.  The Nittany Lions are 5-1 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 18 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Stockton University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
