Yanss Tosses Perfect Game as Abington Sweeps Wells on Senior Day

Abington, Pa. – Penn State Abington sophomore Gretchen Yanss tossed the team's first perfect game since 2015 as she retired 15 straight batters in a 9-0 victory over Wells in game one of a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  The Nittany Lions completed the season sweep of Wells with a 3-2 triumph in game two.  Prior to the start of the opener, Abington celebrated its senior class in part of Senior Day Festivities.  This year's senior class featured, Maddie Duffy, Jenna Gorman, Linda Jackson and Megan Tomoney.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* A seven-run first inning game the Nittany Lions the momentum and plenty of run support for Yanss.  The Nittany Lions scored all seven runs with two outs in the inning.  A costly error by Wells extended the inning as Abington tacked on five runs after the fact.  Sophomore Callie Chambers, Yanss and freshman Jonalynn Hamilton all had two run hits in the inning.
 
* Yanss silenced the Wells' offense as she retired all 15 batters in a row.  She finished the game with four strikeouts with strikeout number four being her 100th of the season. 
 
* Abington added a pair of runs in the third inning extending its lead to 9-0.  Duffy drove in a run with a double to left field and would later score on a wild pitch.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Yanss picked up her 11th win of the season after tossing the second perfect game in the program's Division III era.  The prevous perfect game was back on March 29, 2015 when Michaela Drogalis accomplished the feat in a 16-0 victory at Gallaudet University.  Yanss also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a run and two RBI.
 
* Sophomore Drew Liss finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, a run and an RBI.
 
* Hamilton also had a triple as she went 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Chambers went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Wells broke a scoreless tie in the top half of the third when Serina Sheradin drove in two runs with a two-out single to give the Express a 2-0 lead.
 
* Abington got a run back in the bottom of the third when Hamilton scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Emily Foxhill.
 
* The Nittany Lions tied the game in the fifth inning after sophomore Hailey Gamble forced in a run after drawing a bases loaded walk.
 
* In the bottom of the sixth, Duffy led the inning off with a base hit to left field.  Sophomore Grace Renninger came in as a pinch runner and as the inning progressed got herself to third.  Yanss hit a pop fly to right field and Renninger quickly broke for home on the catch to score the go-ahead run.
 
* In the seventh, Wells got a pair of runners on base with two outs, but freshman Jill Thomas managed to retire the final batter on a pop-up to the infield to close out the doubleheader. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Thomas (5-2) has now won her last three starts with today's victory being her fifth win of the season.  She went the distance and held the Express to just two runs on five hits while striking out five. 
 
* Gorman finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk.
 
* Duffy also had multiple hits as she went 2-for-3.
 
* Foxhill, Gamble and Yanss each drove in a run for the Nittany Lions.
 
* For Wells, Sheradin went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Shanyce Gonzales finished 2-for-3 with a run.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 11th and 12th matchups between Abington and Wells since the start of the 2019 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 12-0 versus the Express in the all-time series.
 
Postseason Picture
Abington entered today's doubleheader having already clinched a spot in next month's United East Tournament.  The Nittany Lions are currently tied for third in the conference standings with Penn State Harrisburg with both teams holding a 13-5 conference record.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 25 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn State Berks in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
