Abington Falls Short in DH at Berks

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team saw its season-long eight game winning streak come to an end after dropping a pair of United East Conference (UEC) contests at Penn State Berks on Tuesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.  Berks won the opener, 4-2, before taking game two by the score of 3-1.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Trailing 2-0, Abington plated a pair of runs in the top half of the third to tie the game.  Sophomore Hailey Gamble drove in a run on a base hit up the middle, while sophomore Callie Chambers scored senior Jenna Gorman with a groundout to third base.
 
* Berks regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Arizona Shreck hit a solo home run over the right field fence to make the score 3-2.  Two innings later, Shreck gave Berks a 4-2 advantage when she delivered a run scoring double to left center field scoring Susan Duncan.

Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Gamble finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI.
 
* Sophomore Gretchen Yanss (11-5) suffered the loss as she went the distance striking out four batters.
 
* For Berks, Brianna Smith (13-3) struck out five batters on her way to her 13th win of the season.  Shreck finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* A three-run third inning turned out to be the difference as Berks scored all its runs in the frame.  Naomi Fay highlighted the inning with a two-run single.
 
* Abington was only able to muster a single run in the fourth to spoil Berks' shutout bid.  Yanss drove in Gamble who led the inning off with a double.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Freshman Jill Thomas (5-3) received the loss as she held Berks to just three runs in a complete game performance. 
 
* Gamble finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.  She went a combined 4-for-6 in the doubleheader.
 
* For Berks, Shreck (8-2) picked up the win after allowing just one run and striking out four.  She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 48th and 49th matchups between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 7-42 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Postseason Picture
Abington is currently tied with Penn State Harrisburg for third place in the United East standings with a 13-7 record.  Harrisburg currently holds the tiebreak.  With four conference games to go, Abington could finish anywhere between second and fourth by the conclusion of the regular season.  
 
Next Up
Changes to the schedule have been made due to inclement weather that is supposed to hit the Northeast this weekend.  Abington will now travel to face Penn State Harrisburg on Thursday, April 27 for a United East doubleheader.  Originally, the two games were scheduled for Saturday, April 29.  The doubleheader at Penn College on Friday, April 28 is still on but could be affected pending the outcome of the weather.
