Abington Clinches Postseason Berth; Sweeps Series Versus Bison

Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Abington baseball officially clinched a spot in next month's United East Conference (UEC) Tournament after defeating Gallaudet University, 19-7, to complete the three-game series sweep over the Bison on Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field.

How It Happened
 
* Senior Zach Morales put the Nittany Lions on the board first with a two-out solo home run in the top half of the first inning.  It marked his ninth long ball of the season and the 22nd of his career.
 
* The momentum carried over into the second when the Nittany Lions scored four runs on five hits, including a two-run single by Morales.  Junior Ryan Lenderman and senior Josh Baar also had run scoring hits in the inning.
 
* Abington increased its lead to 7-0 with single runs in the third and fourth innings.  Lenderman drove in a run with a base hit in the third, while junior Eric Rollins came through with a two-out run scoring single in the fourth.
 
* In the sixth, the Nittany Lions exploded for six runs to increase their lead to 13-0.  Senior Sean Doherty cleared the bases with his first career grand slam.
 
* Abington went on to score five more runs in the seventh and then tacked on a run in the eighth.
 
* Gallaudet spoiled the Nittany Lions' shutout bid with a seven-run ninth inning. Joshua Dugan supplied the Bison with a three-run double in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sophomore Greg Wiley (4-2) recorded his fourth win of the season as he pitched five scoreless innings while holding the Bison offense to just two hits while striking out four batters.
 
* Doherty and Morales each drove in four runs and connected on home runs in the win.  Doherty finished 1-for-3 with two runs and four RBI, while Morales went 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI. 
 
* Baar went 4-for-7 at the plate to go along with three RBI, one of which was a run scoring double.
 
* Rollins finished 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBI, while Lenderman registered three hits in six at-bats to go along with two runs and three RBI.
 
* Junior Justin Pizzo scored four times in the game and walked three times.
 
* For Gallaudet, Dugan finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Eli Solomon recorded a pair of hits going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
 
Plenty of Runs for Everyone
Abington totaled 69 runs in the three-game series with the Bison marking the most runs scored in a three-game conference series in program history. The Nittany Lions however totaled 62 runs in a non-conference doubleheader at Guilford College to start the 2022 season.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 29th meeting between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 24-5 versus the Bison and have won the last 17 games in the series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, April 26 as the Nittany Lions host Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Alverthorpe Park.
