Abington Falls Short at Berks to Open Weekend Series

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team dropped the opener of a three-game United East Conference (UEC) series at Penn State Berks by the score of 6-3 on Friday afternoon at the Hintz Athletic Field.

How It Happened
 
* Berks walked it off in the bottom of the ninth inning with a three-run homer by Chad Evans.  In the bottom of the seventh, Evans tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly. 
 
* Abington led 3-1 in the fifth after junior Justin Fogel connected on a two-run homer with two outs in the inning.  Fogel's eighth long ball of the season broke a 1-1 tie.
 
* Abington scored the game's first run in the third when senior Zach Morales drew a two-out bases loaded walk to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.
 
* Berks also scored in the third when Kolbie Reeser drove in a run to tie the score at 1-1.  Berks added a run in the bottom of the fifth off a solo home run by Nick Bergeman that made the score 3-2.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Fogel finished the game 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI.  His fifth inning home run marked his eighth of the season setting a new career-high.  It also was the 18th of his career which is tied for second most all-time with teammates Tim Petrucelli and Morales.
 
* Senior Sean Doherty was the lone player with multiple hits for Abington as he went 2-for-3 with a double and a run.
 
*  For Berks, Evans finished 2-for-4 with one run and four RBI.  Bergeman finished 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Sam Perrone (1-0) earned the win for Berks as he went three scoreless innings allowing just one hit.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 35th meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 17-18 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington and Berks will resume its series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 8.  Game one is set for 12 p.m. at the Hintz Athletic Field.
