Abington Splits United East Doubleheader with Berks

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team split a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader with Penn State Berks on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.  Berks to the opener by the score of 5-4, before Abington salvaged the doubleheader with a 16-8 victory in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Both teams scored in the opening inning.  Abington tallied a run in the top half of the inning when senior Sean Doherty scored on a pick-off attempt.  Berks responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. David Rudisill drove in both runs with a single.
 
* In the second Abington regained the lead with a two-run inning.  Sophomore Steve Corrado drove in senior Josh Baar who led the inning off with a double.  Corrado would later score when sophomore Eric Stradling dropped down a bunt to give Abington a 3-2 lead.
 
* The score remained 3-2 until the top half of the fifth when Corrado gave Abington a two-run lead when he connected on his second run scoring hit of the game. 
 
* Berks tied the game in the bottom of the inning with two runs.  Berks took advantage of an Abington fielding error to tie the game at 4-4 with two outs in the game. 
 
* In the bottom of the sixth, Berks scored the go-ahead run when Colin Templin singled in Logan Ewert to take a 5-4 lead. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Corrado finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and a team-high two RBI. 
 
* Junior Justin Fogel also had multiple hits in the game as he finished 2-for-3 with a walk. 
 
* For Berks, Ryan Spatz (1-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless sixth inning with two strike outs.  Tommy Peifley pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up his second save.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In the night cap Abington scored 16 unanswered runs to cruise to the game two victory.  A run scoring single by Stradling in the second jumpstarted the offense.  Abington added three runs in the third to increase its lead to 4-0.  Senior Louis Rossner drew a bases loaded walk and was followed by back-to-back run scoring hits from Corrado and junior Eric Rollins.

* Corrado drove in a another run in the fifth to extend the Abington lead to 5-0.  Two innings later Abington tacked on three more runs to make it an 8-0 game.  Rollins highlighted the inning with a two-run double. 
 
* Abington poured it on in the eighth inning with eight runs to double its lead to 16-0.  Six different players drove in runs in the inning. 
 
* Berks spoiled Abington's shutout bid with a run in the bottom of the eighth.  Berks followed with seven runs in the bottom of the ninth. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Senior Brandon Hightower (3-3) limited Berks to just two hits in 6.2 scoreless innings on his way to his third win of the season.  Hightower finished the game with 11 strikeouts, one shy of his season and career-highs. 
 
* Corrado had a career day as he went 5-for-6 with two runs and three RBI.  His five hits set a career-high while his three RBI tied his season and career-highs.
 
* Rollins also set career-highs with four hits and four RBI.  He finished the game 4-for-6 with two runs and two doubles.
 
* Doherty went 3-for-6 at the plate with a run and an RBI.
 
* Fogel finished 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI as he extended his hitting streak to 17 straight games.
 
* Senior Zach Morales had a pair of hits as he went 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.
 
* For Berks, Nick Bergeman went 2-for-6 with two runs and an RBI, while Kolbie Reeser finished 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 36th and 37th matchup between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 18-19 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 11 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Rutgers-Camden in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 6 p.m.
