Abington Defeats Wildcats, 6-3, in United East Action

South Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team improved to 2-1 in conference play after defeating Penn College, 6-3, in a United East Conference (UEC) contest on Friday afternoon at the West Branch Tennis Center.

How It Happened
 
* Abington took two of the three doubles competitions to open the match with a 2-1 advantage.  The Nittany Lions won both second and third doubles by identical 8-5 scores.  At second doubles, juniors Neil Guarino and Josh Kurek found themselves trailing 4-3 against Jesse Kight and Paul Langbein before winning four straight games before taking the match.  Guarino and Kurek are 4-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play at second doubles.
 
* Sophomore Kyle Elliott and Nick Talarico also trailed early on at 3-2 in their third doubles match against Logan Ogden and Zackary Burkhart.  Elliott and Talarico won the match, 8-5.
 
*  Sophomore Andrew Brown improved to 6-1 at first singles with a win over Langbein.  Brown trailed 5-4 before going on to take the opening set by the score of 7-5.  He then cruised to a 6-1 victory in set two to earn the point.
 
* Kurek won his second singles match against Kyle Shuler in straight sets by the score of 6-2 and 6-3.  Kurek's victory gave Abington its fifth point of the match to secure the win.
 
* Freshman Tim Belotserkovsky won his fourth singles match against Kight in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.  Belotserkovsky remains undefeated in conference play at 3-0 and improves to 4-1 overall at fourth singles.
 
* Sophomore Jeevesh Gupta picked up his fourth victory of the season at sixth singles after defeating Braeden Eckard in straight sets.  Gupta won with scores of 6-1 and 6-3. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2014-15 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 8-2 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series. Abington has won five of the last six matches in the series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 11 when the Nittany Lions host Penn State Berks in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Abington Tennis Courts.
