Abington Falls to Top-Seeded Penn College

Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped the opening game of the United East Conference (UEC) Tournament to top-seeded Penn College by the score of 5-0 on Monday morning at Elm Park.  The fourth-seeded Nittany Lions will now face either Penn State Berks or Penn State Harrisburg in an elimination game later today at 4 p.m.

How It Happened
 
* Penn College broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.  The first three batters in the inning reached base and the Wildcats took advantage of an Abington fielding error to score the game's first run.  Hailey DeBrody also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
 
* The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Wildcats plated three runs to increase their lead to 5-0.  Three different players drove in runs in the inning, including a run scoring triple by Maddie Hurst.

* Sophomore Hailey Gamble finished the game 2-for-3 for the Nittany Lions, while fellow sophomore Callie Chambers finished 1-for-3.

* Sophomore Gretchen Yanss struck out a pair of batters in a complete game effort as she is now three strikeouts shy of tying the program's single season record for K's in a season.
 
* For the Wildcats, MacKenzie Weaver (16-4) picked up her 16th win of the season as she held Abington to just three hits in seven innings.  Lexi Snyder finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 18th meeting between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2017 season.  Abington is now 4-14 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington will now face the loser of the Berks/Harrisburg matchup later this afternoon in an elimination game starting at 4 p.m.
