Abington Falls Short Against Cairn in Season Opener

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team hosted Cairn University to open the 2023 season on Friday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  The Nittany Lions fell short to the Highlanders by the score of 3-1 in a non-conference designated match.

How It Happened
 
* Cairn took the opening set by the score of 25-15 as the Highlanders registered seven kills and took advantage of nine attack errors by the Nittany Lions.  Bridget Dahn recorded four of the team's seven kills in the set.
 
* Abington bounced back in the second set to tie the match 1-1 with a 25-18 victory.  The Nittany Lions trailed 3-0 to start the set but went on to score 11 of the next 12 points in the set, including a stretch of eight unanswered points to lead 11-4.  Sophomore Brianna Brozo recorded three service aces in that span. Abington led the rest of the set despite the Highlanders coming within two points of tying the score at 17-15.  The Nittany Lions used a 5-1 run to increase their lead to 22-16 before taking the set, 25-18.
 
* In the third set the Highlanders jumped out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back.  Cairn led by as many as 13 points in the set, while totaling 14 kills.  Hendryl Peabody had four kills for the Highlanders in the third set.
 
* Abington made things interesting in the fourth set as the Nittany Lions nearly forced a fifth and decisive set.  Trailing 20-11, the Nittany Lions rallied to make it a one score game at 23-22.  A kill by Cairn's Caroline Conrad made it set point at 24-22.  However, a service error gave the Nittany Lions a chance to tie the set, but Conrad came through with another kill on the next rally to give Cairn a 25-23 win in the set. 
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Three players recorded double-digit kills for the Nittany Lions.  Brozo totaled 10 kills to go along with a team-high five service aces.  Freshmen Jayla Hickey and Kayla Mason each finished with 10 kills in their collegiate debuts.  Mason led the team with three block assists to go along with eight digs, while Hickey totaled two aces and two block assists.  Both Mason and Hickey each had a solo block in the match.
 
* Sophomore Laine Kulpinski recorded a match-high 30 assists while setting a career-high with 20 digs.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Schaefer also set a career-high in digs as she totaled a match-high 26. 
 
* Senior Sammy Burkert finished with 11 digs.
 
* For Cairn, Conrad totaled a match-high 14 kills to go along with 17 digs.  Dahn also totaled double-digit kills with 10 while finishing the match with five aces and eight digs.  Olivia Zepp led the Highlanders with 20 digs and 28 assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 5-3 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday as the Nittany Lions host both the University of Valley Forge and Immaculata University in a tri-match at the Athletic Building.  Abington will face Valley Forge at 11 a.m. before taking on Immaculata at 3 p.m.
