Nittany Lions Split Home Tri-Match; Brozo Sets School Record with 12 Aces

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team split a home tri-match with the Nittany Lions defeating the University of Valley Forge, 3-0, before falling short against Immaculata University, 3-1, on Saturday at the PSA Athletic Building.

How It Happened vs. Valley Forge
 
* Abington made quick work of the Patriots in a one-sided opening set in which the Nittany Lions won in ease, 25-3.  Sophomore Brianna Brozo highlighted the set as she recorded eight service aces during a 15-0 run resulting in a 16-1 advantage for Abington.  Brozo would go on to finish the set with 12 aces setting a new single match program record.
 
* The Nittany Lions never trailed in the final two sets of the match winning 25-14 and 25-13 respectively to complete the shutout victory.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Valley Forge
 
* The 12 aces by Brozo are the most in a single match Andia Anderson and Cortney Schwar each registered 11 back in 2017.  Schwar also recorded 11 aces in 2016.  Prior to that, Jessica Kane was the lone player to compile that many aces doing so in 2008.
 
* Freshman Jayla Hickey led the team with nine kills while finishing the match with an impressive .615 attack percentage. 
 
* Sophomore Morgan Schaefer finished with a match-high 10 digs and four aces. 
 
* For Valley Forge, Telia Robinson totaled a team-high five kills, while Marie English led the team with six digs.
 
How It Happened vs. Immaculata
 
*  Immaculata closed out the first set scoring nine of the final 11 points to rally to take the set, 26-24.  Trailing 22-17, the Mighty Macs scored five straight points to tie the set at 22-22.  The Nittany Lions then took advantage of back-to-back miscues by Immaculata to make the score 24-22 with set-point in sight.  However, the Mighty Macs grabbed a point of an attack error by the Nittany Lions and then tied the set with a kill before back-to-back aces by Emily Ettien clinched the set. 
 
* Abington responded with a come-from-behind victory of its own in the second set.  Trailing 19-15 late in the set, the Nittany Lions rolled off six straight points to lead 21-19.  The run was fueled four errors by the Mighty Macs along with kills from freshman Brynn Atkins and Brozo. The Nittany Lions would go on to score four of the final five points in the set to tie the match at 1-1.
 
* Immaculata jumped out to a 6-1 run in the third set and never trailed despite the Nittany Lions coming within one point of the lead at 10-9.  That would be as close as Abington would get to the lead as the Mighty Macs slowly began putting space in their lead to eventually take the set, 25-18.
 
* In the fourth set, Abington scored the first three points to take an early lead.  However, Immaculata followed with an 11-0 run which turned out to be the difference in the set.  The Mighty Macs never relinquished their lead the rest of the way finishing the set with a 25-14 triumph.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Immaculata
 
* Brozo finished with a team-high nine kills to go along with two more service aces as she finished the day with 14 total.
 
* Schaefer led the team with a match-high 17 digs.
 
* Sophomore Laine Kulpinski finished with 22 assists and recorded double-digit digs with 11. 
 
* Hickey totaled seven kills and had four total blocks with one solo and three block assists. 
 
* Senior Taylor LaPage, Brozo and Atkins each had two block assists in the match.
 
* For Immaculata, Mia Esposito totaled a match-high 11 kills, while Emma Hodgson finished with 10.  The two combined for 21 of the team's 51 kills in the match.  Christina Lenzo finished with 21 assists and nine digs, while Ettien totaled 19 assists and seven aces.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 12th meeting between Abington and Valley Forge since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 11-1 versus the Patriots in the all-time series.  Against Immaculata, it marked the sixth meeting with the Mighty Macs since 2011 and the first since 2016.  Immaculata has a 5-1 record in the series against the Nittany Lions.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 6 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
