Abington Falls Short to Brandywine in Fall Opener

Media, Pa. –  The Penn State Abington men's tennis team dropped its fall opener by the score of 5-4 at Penn State Brandywine in a non-conference match on Saturday at the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Tennis Courts.

How It Happened
 
* Abington earned the point at second doubles as Tim Belotserkovsky and Neil Guarino came away with an 8-3 victory against Matteo Cousineau and Raj Mamidala. 
 
* Brandywine took first and third doubles to lead the match 2-1 entering singles.  Brandywine won at first doubles, 8-1, and got the edge at third doubles, 9-7.
 
* Guarino won his third singles contest in straight sets after rallying in the first set after falling behind 5-2.  He won the next five games against John Stine to take the set, 7-5.  He followed with a 6-3 victory in set two to win the match.
 
* At fourth singles, Nick Talarico went the distance against Cousineau.  After dropping the first set, 6-2, Talarico rallied back to tie the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set.  In the tiebreak, Talarico trailed 9-8 but took the next point to tie it 9-9.  Talarico went on to win the tiebreak, 11-9.
 
* Tripp Mangifesta picked up his first collegiate victory with a straight sets victory against Alexander Michael.  Mangifesta took the first set, 6-4, and went on to win the second set by the score of 7-5.  In the second set, the score was tied 5-5 when Mangifesta held serve to make it 6-5.  It was 30-30 on Michael's serve but Mangifesta won the last two points to take the set.
 
* Brandywine earned the points at first, second and sixth singles.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 1 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Elizabethtown College.  Match time is set for 12 p.m.
