Abington Opens Fall Schedule with Victory at Brandywine

Media, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team opened the fall portion of its 2023-24 season with a 7-2 victory at Penn State Brandywine on Saturday at the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Tennis Courts.

How It Happened
 
* Abington took two out of the three doubles matches to open the match with a 2-1 lead.  At first doubles, the team of Laurie Flemming and Elisa Steinhardt picked up an 8-3 victory over Jackie Capers and Samma Zahran.  The duo of Isabella DePorre and Soniyah Youngblood cruised to an 8-1 win at second doubles against Katie Butts and Jordan Polillo. Brandywine earned the point at third doubles by default.
 
* Flemming, in her first collegiate singles match, got the victory at first singles with a straight sets victory against Zahran.  Flemming won by the scores of 6-2, 6-4.
 
* Steinhardt went the distance at second singles and came away with the victory against Capers.  Steinhardt took the first set, 6-3, before Capers bounced back to win the second set, 6-4.  In the third set, the score was tied 4-4 when Steinhardt broke serve to go ahead 5-4.  She held serve to take the set, 6-4.
 
* Youngblood cruised to a straight sets victory at third singles over Polillo as she earned the point with scores of 6-1, 6-0. 
 
* DePorre earned the win at fourth singles as she defeated Elizabeth Keeper in straight sets by the scores of 6-1, 6-2. 
 
* Sophomore Abbey Anderson was victorious at fifth singles as she came away with a straight sets victory as well against Butts.  Anderson won with scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
 
* Brandywine earned the point at sixth singles by default.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 as the Nittany Lions host Cedar Crest College in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Abington Tennis Courts.
